It s likely that photography aficionados attending Marders April 26 Artist Talk & Book Signing will understand the subtitle of Brad Oliphant s handsome 10 X 12 volume, Solarized Floral Diptych Photographs, but it s possible that even they may miss the ambiguity of the title, Enlightened Blooms (Glitterati Inc.). About the Author
Douglas Kirkland joined Look Magazine in his early twenties, and worked for Life Magazine during the golden age of 1960s-1970s photojournalism. Among his assignments were international features as well as fashion and celebrity work, photographing such luminaries as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich. Through the years, Kirkland has worked on the sets of hundreds of motion pictures. His fine arts photography has been exhibited all over the world, and is in the permanent collections of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, the Smithsonian, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, England. A sought-after lecturer, Kirkland has received a “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the American S.O.C., Photographer of the Year from the PMA, a Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from CAPIC in his native Canada. When not traveling the globe on assignment, he lives in the Hollywood Hills with his wife and business partner Fran�oise.

At one hundred and sixty pages, this oversized tabletop hardbound targets those that enjoy beautiful depictions of floral designs that have been altered. Complete with a clear plastic protective cover, illustrations grace almost every page. With no table of contents or index to look up the flower’s name, the book ends with acknowledgments.
Author and professional fine art photographer Oliphant has been taking pictures of fashion, commercial, and nature for over forty years. This being his first publication of photography, he focuses on a topic that has touched his heart for decades: flowers.
After a forward by Russell Hart and an introduction, there are almost one hundred and fifty pages of artworks showing blooming flowers. Some flowers include the allium, anthurium, bleeding heart, calla lily, cosmos, dahlia, hibiscus, orchid, rose, tulip, and zinnia. While there are four pages dedicated to one type of flower that has both its botanical and common names, there may be six pages concentrating on another or more than one set of dahlias or roses illustrated.
Instead of taking the standard artistic approach, the photographer has produced pictures that are over-saturated, over-exposed, and diffused that may initially seem awkward to the viewer. However, keeping the pages open explores the exquisiteness of the incredible colors, textures, and designs found on a petal or stamen.
Sometimes there are color reversals of stark white tree trunks against multi-colored Jackson Pollock-style backgrounds of the weeping cherry or Georgia O’Keeffe looking roses. The solo parrot tulip has one full-page of a pink flower showing grayed details against a white background opposite a deeper pink one set on a black surface. More interesting are the full-page photographs of the vivid dahlia hortensis, impressive moth orchid, and captivating southern magnolia.
This stunning, artistic book would be cherished by lovers of photography and flora as it shows expressive arrangements that engage the viewer to stop, slow down, and observe God’s beautiful creations that surround us every day.

Floral close-ups in unusual colors

Solarization is a photographic process in which the dark and light areas of the object being photographed are reversed; if done in color, the colors are reversed or otherwise altered. The effect originally occurred when film was exposed to sunlight for too long or at the wrong time in the photographic process, hence the name. It was known from the earliest days of photography, in the 19th century, and was used extensively by surrealist photographer Man Ray in the early 20th century. The results are variable but can be extremely striking.
Happily for those of us with no darkroom skills, solarization can now be applied with one click as a filter in Photoshop. I’m sure that Brad Oliphant used much more complex techniques, however. Here he presents close-up photographs of flowers in pairs (that is, two copies of the same photograph, sometimes with size or directionality altered), with each photo of the pair shown in a different mixture of color and grayscale. The results are quite lovely, featuring brilliant colors, extremely crisp edges, and interesting contrasts. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes floral macrophotographs and wants to see an unusual way of handling this often-used subject.
My only criticism, fairly minor, is that the book is somewhat padded in that each pair of photos is prefaced by another two-page spread that contains nothing but the name of the flower (common and scientific) and smaller copies of the full-page photos that follow. The name of the flower could have been put above the full-page photos, making this extra spread unnecessary—which would have left room for additional pairs of beautiful full-page photos if Mr. Oliphant had them.

The Light of Love Shines Through The Eyes of Brad Oliphant

The coffee table book to have for yourself as well as all those that grace your loving home to enjoy! I have been blessed to view the transformative photographs of Brad for a few years now. Each time I think "this is it" he amazes with additional photographs that are a masterpiece of artistry and divine expression. Brad does not just take photographs, he captures something so much deeper than what we commonly see with the naked eye. His photographs have heart and a story behind them that weaves into each individual in their own unique way. Thank you Brad for continuing to Inspire! Looking forward to your mastery through the years ~
