it was ok

I found it sad that the hero, and Heroine let so much time slip by, before getting to know one another. They kept so many secrets from one another, causing each other to mistrust the other. Leah married Stavros when she was only 18. He married her to keep her safe. So he only married her out of duty. He was true to his word. A very honorable man. He put her up in a nice apartment, and made sure she had everything she needed. She felt like the apartment was a jail cell. She always had a security detail that tracked her every movement, and reported back to Stavros. He never came by and checked on her, or talked to her. Both were carrying around guilt over the death of his sister, and her best friend. He had blamed Leah for his sister's death.

Leah had called Stavros many times, but he never took the time to call her back. She wanted to get on with her life, and follow her dreams. She wanted to be a fashion designer. She loves creating clothes, and she is good at it. She can't touch her trust fund without his permission. She needs to dip into it, to get started. So she had to find a way to bring him to her. She put on a slinky dress, and showed up to a party. She got drunk, and out of nowhere there he was. After she sobered up, Stavros realized that his wife wasn't the young girl that he remembered. She was all grown up, and sexy as heck. He had no idea that she designed outfits, and he wanted to get to know his wife. He wanted to know more about her, and her life. He did seem to hold his self back, and so did she.
The one thing that impressed me about the hero, and heroine, is they didn't cheat. He still wore his wedding band, and was never with another woman. The first time they did make love, she was a virgin.
I see others loved this book, but for me, the story, plot, and characters didn't pull me into the book like I had hoped. I did finish it. It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't by any means my favorite book.

I'm Sorry I Cannot Recommend

Not a good read in my opinion...not that it counts for much. What is with the Tycoons, Sheikhs, Princes, Kings, and other dignitaries that they treat women terribly? In HP a lot of the men are emotionally stunted, emotionally abusive, even physically and sexually rough and hold a woman/women captive. What is up with that? Is this the Formula Harlequin Presents puts forth for authors to follow? And why won't these dastardly men let the woman/women talk and explain what is going on. But no, they are so high and mighty that they think they know what everyone else thinks and feels. Let's not forget how hard-headed they are.

This young woman was held prisoner for five unnecessary years and was not guilty of what Stavros accused her of. The only reason I gave this two-stars instead of one is because during her five-year captivity Stavros remained faithful. I was shocked by that bit of a moral compass. Maybe HP is just not for me although I have read several good ones.

About the Author
Susie Hodge is an art historian, author and artist with over 80 books published, mainly on art and history. She also writes articles, web resources for museums and galleries, and gives workshops and lectures and schools, universities, museums, galleries, businesses and societies. She has taught in schools and colleges and contributes to radio and TV documentaries. She has an MA the History of Art and is a Fellow of the RSA.

Mmm, I'll Still Not Sold

I had this book on the night stand while I was finishing up Gijs van Hensbergen's book, 'Guernica.' After Picasso's piece was first displayed, one regional leader looked at it and said, "It's awful. A four-year-old could have done that." I glanced over at Hodge's book, looking forward to reading what she has to say on the topic.

In this creative and easy-to-read book, Hodge's uses upwards of 200 pieces of modern art as a reference; from the obscure (at least to me) to more common names such as Dali, Matisse, Warhol, Munch, and even Picasso!

Basically, Hodges devotes two pages to each piece covered. She provides background as to what was happening in the artist's life at the time was piece was created. In some instances, she will expand on how the artist felt about the piece, where it eventually ended up, and what broader influences were in play. In essence, this helps the reader gain a more sophisticated understanding of the artist and the piece created.

In a separate section on the page, Hodge then offers her rationale for why, 'No, your five-year-old [or any other child] could not have done that.' While some of her arguments are playful, she essentially focuses less on what the artist did (smear painting, for example) and more on what message they were trying to communicate. Based on this, she is technically correct (given the cognitive limitations of young children), but it's also somewhat of a reach. Why? Because some of the art portrayed comes across as being a joke (a pile of red, white, and blue candy for example), regardless of what the artist felt or intended.

As an example, a common approach to Hodge's argument is how she discussed Hoch's 'Cut with the Kitchen Knife:'

"...Overcrowded and seemingly nonsensical, this montage looks as if a child has haphazardly stuck down fragments of photographs onto a sheet of paper. However, Hoch was consciously commenting on World War I, sexism, and social and political tensions with Germany..."

So, why didn't I give this book one star? Well, it's because I actually liked it. As my heading to this review suggests, Hodge is pushing it, trying to convince the reader that a child couldn't make some (much?) of the art in this book. Nonetheless, the brief descriptions of each piece are illuminating and the photos in the book are excellent. Hodge was probably being more tongue-in-cheek than she lets on, but she does make good arguments in some instances.

Anyhow, if you love art of any kind, I think you'll like this book. Especially if you run into contemporary art---by choice or because someone insisted you go with them to the gallery/museum---this book will open your eyes to what goes on behind the creation. That, in particular, was helpful for me, because (as you can tell), most contemporary art just doesn't do it for me.

Skeptics can be influenced

I believe that most modern art is simply a clever exercise to extract money from those with too much money and no sense of what makes good art. Having confessed to my bias, I strongly recommend this book.

The author exposed me to new artists and shared her rich understanding of modern art in its historic and artistic context. She shares the often less than obvious message that the artist is attempting to communicate. For example, the author provides the following about Artist's S*** by Piero Manzoni: "The work parodies inflated values of art and also exploits consumerism, particularly the developing preoccupation with packaging and possessions. Meanwhile, the contents of the can represent the ultimate use of waste as an art material." (p. 116-7). I would not be willing to purchase the art priced at the equivalent of its weight in gold, but I can better appreciate the multi-layered message and the creative process that generated the idea for this piece of art.

The most valuable contribution for me was making explicit the implicit assumptions about art that some of the artists are challenging. For example, the author provides the following about the Fountain by Marcel Duchamp: "The most famous provocation of the art world began when the Frenchman Marcel Duchamp bought a standard urinal from a New York hardware store... (W)ith one simple but outrageous act, Duchamp proved that the modern artist is not sovereign, and that institutions such as museums also do much to determine what is art... Duchamp posed other questions about art, among them, what are the characteristics and conditions that define an object as a work of art? Should art appeal primarily to the eye (not primarily to the mind), and should it involve some transformation of materials or can a pre-made object be considered for its merits? (p.102-3)

With more books like this one, perhaps we will all be less judgmental and more appreciative of modern art and the artists who share their messages with us.

Attractive but repetitious!

For each one of a hundred artworks, Deborah Hodge provides a little potted analysis, as well as six more kinds of information stuffed into two over-designed pages. Her point, made over and over again, is that while a child could simply put paint on canvas or arrange items on a gallery floor, the artist is exploring deeper aesthetic, historic, personal, or cultural questions.

A quick and fun read. I enjoyed the characters and cant wait to read more!! Takes you out of your day for a little while and makes you laugh. The heroine was spunky and believably real.

Please, this is a plea to all authors, please pay for an editor. At least have a fresh set of eyes look over your manuscript. The errors were very distracting. The name of a fairly major character suddenly changed, words were used incorrectly, etc. Running spell check does NOT take the place of actual editing!
The First Time is very short, more of a novella really. Beside my rant above I didn't love the story. I never felt like I got to know Ryan. So, not my favorite book, but I probably would have rated it better without most of the errors present.

About the Author

Ralph E. Hanson is the chair of the Department of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Previously, he was on the faculty of the P.I. Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University where he taught for fifteen years. For more than fifteen years he has taught media literacy and introduction to mass communication. He was a founding developer of West Virginia University’s online extended learning program He has also taught newswriting, blogging and commentary writing, community journalism, and diffusion of innovations. Ralph has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and anthropology from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in journalism from Iowa State, and a doctorate in sociology from Arizona State University. Poorly written and fact checked

I highly recommend passing on this book. While it is very up to date, unfortunately there is a lot of information that is useless of just wrong. The information is presented in a very unprofessional manner such as spending a page talking about how the author enjoys a specific channel on Twitch. The content is easy to read, but that is because it is very informal.
You will likely come across a few names of key people and inventions that changed the communications world, but for the most part you will find nothing of value.

The formatting needs to changed. There's no clear signifier of what's the main text and what's side material. Would be a thousand times better if they made this into an eTextbook and had exact copies of the pages from the physical textbook. Should also add hyperlinks to the outside media it constantly refers to.

What a blessing

My sister and I listened to this book from Audible and I am now reading his other book. Such a sweet, well written story of despair and hope.Having just lost a husband less than a year ago, I can certainly relate to his sorrow and feelings of worthlessness - being old and useless. What a blessing this book as been to me.

A Book for everyone

There is a part of me that didn't think I needed to review A Man Called Ove because so many people have read it at this point, but I have talked to a few who have not, hence my desire to write this review.

I will admit that I am entirely on the Ove train!

The book is about a man, named Ove, who is the angry neighbor that we all seem to have. He complains about everything, has put up signs around his neighborhood with rules about what should and shouldn't be done, and feels there is a proper place for everything. He is not a friendly guy to say the least.

Into his life walks or rather drives a family who are to be his new neighbors. He doesn't bother to get to know their names and calls them the pregnant one and the lanky one. After an accident with the lanky one, Ove is forced to help this family, complaining the entire time.

Throughout the book Ove also speaks to his wife, complaining about the neighbors, the rule breakers, and how much he misses her (very minor spoiler). During interludes within the narrative, we read about how Ove became Ove. I will say by the end of the book, a bunch of dust was flying around the room and some got into my eyes.

The first thing to write is this book is funny. Ove is quite the character and how he treats people is hysterical. He just doesn't care what he says or how he says it. He simply wants order in his world and has lived that way for all of his life. The way he expresses himself becomes incredibly funny.

It is also a tragic story. Backman interweaves the two (funny and tragic) quite well and doesn't make it overly heartwarming. This could have easily become a book with the sentiment that we don't know people's past, so don't judge them, but it isn't. Ove is an ass in his past too and sometimes with reason. Backman keeps it level with just enough to make the reader fall for Ove.

The great thing is this is a book that pretty much anyone and everyone can (and will) enjoy. I recommended this one for book clubs and discussion groups. Grandmas will like this as well as middle aged men. Ove is simply a good book.

Pretend Ove is 79

I honestly didn't go into this book expecting to like it as much as I did. I have trouble with books where the main character is not someone I particularly like. But, I gave this one a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn't help but like the curmudgeon. It's not a deep-thinking book. It's there for entertainment, to make you 'feel' emotions, to transport you to another place and another life. Therefore, I give the book five stars for being exactly what it claims to be--a story about one man and the circle of friends that he makes despite his grouchy personality. I liked the backstory with the wife (even though I thought the author went too far with the tragedy heaped onto this always-optimistic woman). I bought the audio book to listen when I couldn't read and the narrator was flawless. I've heard some pretty bad narrators lately from best-selling books (Miss Peregrine's for example), but this audio book was very well done. I have one gigantic bone to pick with the author. 59 years old is not 89 years old. Fifty-nine years old is when most people are in the apex of careers--before retirement and also having a lot of knowledge and experience to help them in their career fields. The 50-somethings in my office know what an iPad is, how to use computers, have the latest cell phones, and are pretty up on all the new tech gadgets because they are the ones that can afford them! There was no reason why the author couldn't make this a lot more believable by making the main character 79 or older. There was nothing to prevent the backstory being set further back. The whole time I was reading, I had to make myself forget the character was supposed to be 59. For godsakes, the President of the United States is 56!! I wonder why the author chose such a relatively young main character to act like my grandfather would. But, if you can overlook that weird decision, the rest of the story is very well done and very entertaining.

Gregory Moody is the founder of Gospel-Chords.com. He has over 30 years of experience in the music field. Having studied diligently under those taught by some of the great jazz masters, and being greatly influenced by them, Greg was inspired to create the "Adventures in Harmony Series". His unique harmony and composition styles are the foundation that lead to the development of this unique program. Greg also has a degree in Computer Science from Rutgers University. Combining his knowledge and passion of both music and computers, he utilized both extensively to analyze chords, voicings relationships and to discover harmonies that only a few may have stumbled upon. As a term of endearment his friends, family and colleagues have bestowed upon him the title of "King of Harmony".

Wonderful start to brave new world

I bought this book to broaden my musical horizons. I am a keyboard player and I mostly write my own jazz compositions or improvise on standards. Being self-taught I've struggled to master the sometimes incomprehensible language of advanced chords. This book helped very much. This book is light on theory and heavy on application. I applied the technique to some of the my work and it immediately became richer.

I would give this a five star review except for one thing: the two examples are in major keys. Given the wide variety of music in minor keys one is left unsure how to approach minor keys. Their website gospel-chords.com has a malfunctioning 'ask a question' feature and their facebook page is mainly advertising.
