Real Artists Don't Starve is a feel good book of anecdotes and research about artists of all stripes who have come to a point where they can make a living. It is not so much about the practical aspects (such as how to do it within specific industries or avenues to pursue) as it is anecdotal and inspirational.

If you have read more than a few books/blogs about being an artist and making a living, particularly those of a more inspirational bent, you won't really find anything new here.

Despite that, the way that the stories are told is nicely done. I enjoyed it and found it a light and quick read and will probably read it again at some point. It's one of those books that's better suited to someone who needs encouragement rather than practical instructions.

Alan Ball's two act non-musical play, "Five Women wearing The Same Dress" is something that touches us all because in one way or another, we've all lived it. To begin, you already know Alan Ball becausse his television series "Six Feet Under" was known even to people who did not get HBO. (I watched it's entirety on DVD. Mr. Ball is today's Bernard Shaw; Today's Briajn Friel; Tenneseee williams; Today's Edward Albee; Tolday's promise that the American Theatre is not dead but thriving with brilliance, wamrth and truth.

This tiopouc is well studied in film, theatre, teleivision and literature, but so much exists worth exploring in the convcept of looking back at one's life and seeing how it affected you that the subject is just as fresh as Kaufman & Hart's "Merrily We Roll Along", Sondheim's "Follies", "Is There Life After high School, "The Heidi Chronicles" and onward. In this case we have five bridesmaids who take turns escaping from the reception to one of the oppulent bedrooms upstairs. The five women have one thing in common: at one point they were all connected in some way to tracy, the bride whom we never see and whom is described as a Macy's day float in her dress. Their own dresses are typical hporrific dresses complete with hats. Each woman arrives with expectations, surprised to be a bridesmaid and very different from each other. By the end of the evening (the play runs just over two hours with an intermission) each of he women have a lot more in common than Tracy and have learned that perhaps they dpon't even have Tracy as a piece of unity. It is no accident that we never see her.

The dialogue- and monologues for you acting students - is fresh and honst; fast paced like an Aaron Sorkin or Joss Wheedon script, yet paces well. The play requires a middle southern dialect in varying degrees -always subtle- but not one of these women is stupid or a stereotype, though they may appear so as we meet them.

So whether you're looking to put on a play or somply enjoy reading them, Alan Ball's "Five Women Wearing The Same Dress" is remarkable. A hint of Henley's "Crimes Of The Heart" or "Steel Magnolias". A bit of Aaron Sorkin's "A Few Good Men," Ball writes fro women well and the only thing I noted was that, given the age of the play, to do it now one would have to doublke the proice of Meredith's Victoria Secret budget.

Scene for Acting Scene

I used this book for use in acting class for a specific scene with nice amounts of dialogue between two women. I like the idea of the book, and Ball's attempt to make the women sound and appear realistic and authentic, but it definitely fell short in some places. Worked well for class, though, as you really have to look into your objectives since all of these women have a lot of issues.

Can only scroll down to a book and not chapters in the book.

I love the way that QR codes within the text allow you to see videos by Dr Gets on hundreds of Biblical topics. The weakness in the Kindle version is the inability to go directly to a chapter from the table of contents (TOC). You can go from the TOC to any book. However, from there you have to progress forward or backward page at a time to chapters and verse. This is very time consuming. I have five other Kindle Bibles, and all of them allow you to go directly from the TOC to any chapter within any book. If this is fixed, I will love this Bible.

Incredible Study Bible for the Technology Guru!

So when I picked up this Bible in a Christian bookstore around Thanksgiving 2011, I knew I needed to own it someday. My iPhone 4S has a QR reader app on it and I immediately began playing around with it as I perused this Bible. The video links all work flawlessly and Dr. Gene Getz is a great speaker. He's not overly excitable or even eloquent, but he certainly gets the point across and uses real life illustrations to do so. Each of the 1,500 points scattered throughout the Bible are derived straight from Scripture as you read, and each verse that the point touches on is already highlighted for you, for focused study. The Bible even comes with a free Life Essentials QR scanning app that replaces a default QR scanner. This app includes ALL the video links by Bible Book already, in case you want to simply go through them chronologically or however you wish to study. The app works perfectly and even follows your progress by checking off videos you've already watched, and you can even tag your favorites as such for quick reference to find later.

Overall, this Bible has been an immense and valuable resource for my personal study, and my church's pastor even wants to take a look at it. Technology, when used properly, is an amazing tool for the Christian, and this Bible is leaps and bounds ahead of any other study Bible to date (which is difficult to admit because I have a growing collection of inspiring study Bibles).

All you need in a Bible and more!

Gene visited our church a few years back. I really enjoyed hearing the views he has on the Bible. While visiting he introduced our church to the Life Essentials Study Bible.

I took a few minutes to thumb through his version amd I was amazed bt the information it it. The links to videos where he explains the passages in more detail. The summary of each book and the meanings behind the context were remarkable; however, I had just purchased a new KJV version with thumb index and did not want to spend an additional $80.

So I passed it over. However over the next year I found myself going back to it in the stores and looking it up online. I later found it on Kindle. Still it was too much for me to purchase for myself. Relatives birthdays came up and I felt the need to buy one for them. I purchased two harback editions on sale between $25 -$35. Yet i could not purchase one for myself.

I downloaded the Kindle sample and started to fall in love with it. It was hard to navigate and I saw so many people complain about how to search for the books of the Bible and that there wasn't a table of contents so I kept passing ot over. Today I find the Kindle edition on sale for $2.99 so I go for it and very glad I did. The interaction on the Kindle edition was far better than the sample depicted and I found that there IS on fact a table of contents which can be accessed through your Kindle menu. In the menu it brings you to the book you are reading and with a few turn on the pages like the real thing you can locate you verse easily. I am very happy I made this purchase and thankful the price came down on it.
