General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia had been locked into the sprawling defenses surrounding the logistical stronghold of Petersburg and the Southern capital at Richmond for more than eight months when General Grant struck beyond his far left flank to break the extended Rebel lines. A series of battles led up to April 1, when General Phil Sheridan’s forces struck at Five Forks. The attack surprised and collapsed General George Pickett’s Confederate command and turned Lee’s right flank. An attack along the entire front the following morning broke the siege and forced the Virginia army out of its defenses and, a week later, into Wilmer McLean’s parlor to surrender at Appomattox.

Despite this decisive Union success, Five Forks spawned one of the most bitter and divisive controversies in the postwar army when Sheridan relieved Fifth Corps commander Gouverneur K. Warren for perceived failures connected to the battle. The order generated a life-long effort by Warren and his allies to restore his reputation by demonstrating that Sheridan’s action was both unfair and dishonorable. The struggle climaxed with a Court of Inquiry that generated a more extensive record of testimony and exhibits than any other U.S. military judicial case in the 19th Century. In addition to Sheridan and Warren, participants included Gens. U. S. Grant and Winfield S. Hancock, and a startling aggregation of former Confederate officers.

McCarthy’s Confederate Waterloo is grounded upon extensive research and a foundation of primary sources, including the meticulous records of a man driven to restore his honor in the eyes of his colleagues, his family, and the American public. The result is a fresh dispassionate analysis that may cause students of the Civil War to reassess their views about some of the Union’s leading generals.

About the Author
Michael J. McCarthy is a graduate of LeMoyne College, class of 1969 with a BA in history. He then received his MA in American history in 1971. Circumstances led him to a career in government and he received MPA degrees in public finance from the University at Albany and in public management from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. During his long career with New York State he never lost his love of Civil War history, however. As he approached retirement from the position of Assistant Commissioner of the State Department of Transportation, he went back to school and received his Ph.D. in American history from the University at Albany in 2010. His interest in the Battle of Five Forks was kindled during a Capital District Civil War Round Table trip to the battlefield, and this work is a re-edited version of his dissertation.

"Overall, I find this to be an excellent textbook introducing the linguistic analysis of English. All the terminology and analytical techniques are presented thoroughly, and are applied to a wide range of data from English. I particularly like the fact that examples from the BNC are brought in as additional evidence. Specific issues in the analysis of English are covered, such as the wide range of allomorphs, and it is good to see that the conditioning of these morphs are dealt with as well. The exercises cover the material in each chapter, and extend it to give the student insights into further study. A breaktrough or even more!

Professor Stakhov has written a book that may well change not only the way we view the history of mathematics, but the future development of mathematics in its application to the natural sciences and computer design. This book is the result of the author's four decades of research in the field of Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Mean (also called the Golden Ratio or the Golden Section) and their applications. The volume contains chapters on the history of mathematics, the generalized Fibonaccis and Lucas numbers, the generalized golden proportions, the golden algebraic equations, the generalized Binet formulas, Fibonacci and golden matrices, and hyperbolic models. Stakhov suggests applications of number systems (Bergman's numeral system) with irrational radices in computers, coding theory, cryptography and mobil phone design, because irrational numbers are nothing else than commands for mathematical operations in space and time, see Where Mathematics Comes From: How the Embodied Mind Brings Mathematics into Being.

Stakhov, of Russian and Ukrainian background, now living in Toronto, Canada, is an outstanding member of a minority of scientists, who has realized that the Golden Mean and its expression through Pascal's Triangle, Fibonacci and Lucas Number lies at the very center of the creative principle of nature itself. Recent scientific developments in physics, chemistry and cosmology have refocused attention to the mathematical properties of the Golden Mean and its meaning on the macrocosmic and microcosmic levels.

However, no scientific work can ever be complete: Stakhov is not aware of some developments in theoretical chemistry by Jan Boeyens, see Number Theory and the Periodicity of Matter and Chemistry from First Principles, supporting the fundamental role of the golden mean. Also the book A New Kind of Science is full of Pascal's Triangles!

Until now, from my point of view "From Golden Mean to Chaos" (printed in Argentina and, it is a pity, not on offer by amazon.com) by Vera de Spinadel is or was the most advanced book on the importance of the Golden Mean. Stakhov cites this book, but does not refer to renormalization and the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theorem, in which the Golden Mean plays a role, too.

Until now, our brains and computers have a quite different architecture. However, by encoding and decoding the information entropy of a system no other wave could be more optimal than a wavelet containing the Golden Mean and its mathematics itself. Indeed, based on empirical data, the paper "The golden mean as clock cycle of brain waves", published in Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 18 (2003) 643-652, suggests that our brain uses these advantages of "The Mathematics of Harmony"! And already Roopun, A. K. et al., Frontiers in Neuroscience 2 (2008) 145-154, confirmed empirically this conclusion of the substantial role of the Golden Mean in our processing of information. Does our brain even work on the basis of a Ternary Mirror-Symmetrical Numeral System, as invented by Stakhov?

The quality of paper and print of this book is far above average. In any case you will buy a book, which will find its place in the history of science.

A magnificent book

As a child I read "Dr Posin's Giants- men of science" and found it inspirational. As an adult I read this book by Stakhov and I am bewildered - How did I overlook this book when it was first printed? This book is a masterful exploration of history and the essence of mathematical reasoning...by a master of the subjects.
