Silicon Processing for the VLSI Era

This book provides an outstanding presentation of Silicon processing technology that is technically current, rich in detail, and most importantly, factually correct. The new edition of this book appears to have been completely rewritten, and covers every important area of Silicon processing in a comprehensive manner. I especially enjoyed that fact that in each chapter of the book the basic principles underlying a technology are explained first, and these explanations are then integrated into descriptions of the relevant technology (i.e. PVD, CVD, CMP etc.).
The two Lithography sections are beautifully done, and contain lucid explanations of concepts that I have not seen anywhere else.
For anyone who is seriously interested in semiconductor manufacturing, this book is a "must have". No other volume even comes close to being this comprehensive.

THE best set of technical references in this area

In my 25 years of semiconductor process development I have never come across such a complete and in-depth collection of device and process knowledge in a single place. Years ago we needed to spend many hours with the journals to extract the requisite information to supplement our laboratory efforts. These volumes synthesize the basics with the most modern techniques now employed in advanced technologies. In addition, many subtle processing difficulties are addressed as well which will be much appreciated by the researcher. Through the years I have purchased in excess of 100 text references and none comes as close to these in the total knowledge contained within. These volumes are intended for the researchers and engineers working in this field yet they are so very well written and easy to comprehend that any one with such an interest in this field can understand them. Study these volumes completely.

From Cade's perspective...

I found the main Otherworld story compelling but perhaps a little contrived, especially with the weather-taming women deep in the mountains. However, while Cade interacted with his sister and the Morrigan, information previously hinted at was elaborated upon with more details.
I appreciated the extra scenes from Dolmarehn in Cade's perspective as they were my favorite scenes. As much as I loved the Otherworld series and getting to know Cade's point of view, I liked Meghan's perspective more though.

Intriguing premise.

Very interesting story line, I can only say the problem is the same with other writers, most writers not just the beginners. Improper use of possessive with a gerund, and Improper use of pronouns when speaking of another person and yourself.Example; "It's just going him and I tonight." It really grates on the nerves.

I loved this whole series of books. I got the first book in the series for free. After reading it I promptly purchased the others. I have enjoyed the way she has written extra side books to give more info and from a different perspective. Will definitely be getting more of her books in the future.

About the Author
Regina M. Abrami is a Senior Fellow at the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), Director of the Global Program at the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science. Prior to this, she was a member of the Harvard Business School faculty for eleven years, and chair of its inaugural international immersion program.

William C. Kirby is the Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and the T. M. Chang Professor of China Studies at Harvard University. He is Chairman of the Harvard China Fund. He has served as Director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard. He is an honorary professor at Peking University, Nanjing University, Chongqing University, Zhejiang University, East China Normal University, Fudan University, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and National Chengchi University.

F. Warren McFarlan is a Baker Foundation Professor at Harvard Business School, as well as the Albert H. Gordon Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus. He is concurrently a guest professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management and codirector of the school’s China Business Case Center.

A compelling and accessible introduction to China's business climate

Can China Lead?, by Regina M. Abrami, William Kirby, and F. Warren McFarlan, asks a question that can not be definitively answered but is well worth asking. The authors seamlessly combine their knowledge of China’s history, people, and politics to advise companies looking to engage in commercial interactions with one the world’s second largest economy (As ranked by GDP by the United Nations, 2012). As the authors state in their Introduction, “Chinese businesses compete globally, now going head-to-head with North American and European corporations in telecommunications, heavy machinery, and renewable forms of energy.” (p. x)

Procurement is spending an increasing amount of time analyzing the tradeoffs between building global supply chains and reshoring (or at least nearshoring) materials and services that might previously have come from China. This book is an accessible introduction to the highly contextual nature of business in China. The primary tensions, which sometimes lead to misunderstandings by businesses in other countries, are between the official government and the dominant Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The CCP has leaders representing their interests in every major corporate organization, leading to misgivings about intellectual property rights and agreements.

Companies looking to do business in China would be wise to understand what holds value to Chinese firms, including manufacturing or design processes that allow them to build their own knowledge and skills. “For example, an agreement with Boeing to buy a large number of Dreamliners for Chinese airlines was directly linked to the decision by Boeing to have the rudders built in China. Had the Chinese not gained access to that technology, the planes would not have been ordered.” (p. 92). Clearly articulating and calculating the impact of such tradeoffs becomes a critical success factor for companies looking to meet the demand of Chinese customers.

The authors open the book by making the strong case that business in China can not be understood separate from it’s history, one that is less cohesive than many of us think. “China is instead a series of interlocking regional economies, with populations the size of European nations, or larger.” (p. 10) The complexities of dealing with multiple layers of officials representing varying levels of local government or the Party should not be taken lightly.

For all of the seeming severity and cautionary information, many of the modern news stories incorporated throughout clearly illustrate the author’s points while almost entertaining in a way reminiscent of pop-culture tabloid falls from grace. Particularly notable are Mao Zedong’s widow, Jiang Qing, who upon finding herself on trial for causing disharmony (etc.) during the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976 was referred to as ‘the criminal’ by her court appointed lawyer, and Bo Xilai, a once influential Party chief who was accused of corruption, covering up murder, and “improper” relations with a number of women. (p. 1)

The authors are clearly skeptical of China’s ability to lead without significant changes to their political system. “If anything, the political system created by the CCP stands in the way of the substantive changes needed to transform this country of 1.3 billion people into a place with sustainable foundations for economic growth and social well being.” (p. i) Although the future of China’s economy – or more accurately represented, economies – is an open question, Can China Lead? is a compelling and worthwhile read for anyone transacting with or sourcing from companies in China.

Disappointed

The authors have strong credentials. But this book is weak, and has failed to teach me new things. Inefficiency and corruption in China is well-known and well-documented, but how the weak governance of the country (and its corporates) will continue to hold China back deserves a much more thorough analysis. The book's reference to China Netcom is seriously flawed, as the authors obviously do not know the details of that episode.

Basso, an anthropologist who has done fieldwork among the Western Apache of Arizona for over 30 years, provides a fascinating scholarly study of the meaning and significance of the Apache place names found in the area surrounding the community of Cibecue, Arizona. Some Apache place names describe features of the landscape or climate, while others derive from historical or mythological events. All, however, are rich in descriptive imagery and depth of meaning for the Apache people of the area. With the help of several Apache informants, Basso explores the place worlds underlying the names of localities and through them lets the Apache express their own understanding of their history, identity, values, and morality. This work, which won the Western States Book Award for creative nonfiction, is a valuable contribution to anthropological studies of place and location. At the same time, it provides a sensitive perspective on the Apaches' understanding of themselves. It happened...

It happened in Indiana. A girl downloaded this book onto her Kindle, curled up on a porch swing on a fine summer evening, and read stories of people in another place and time. These people, called the Western Apache, saw places in a completely different way than she ever had. Stunned, she began to think about places and events in her own life, and felt the deep sadness of being someone who had moved a lot and lost attachment to some of the places in her family story. The level of philosophical background needed to digest the book sometimes led to her skimming over chunks of the book. The stories delighted and inspired her. As she ended the reading, another summer evening later, she longed for more Western Apache stories and determined to be more attentive to the world around her and the places she had been.

Wisdom Sits in Places: a brief review

In this book, Keith Basso presents the Western Apache at Cibecue. His decades long interaction with these gentle, articulate people provides us with an intimate and respectful view of a powerful tradition among them: the invocation of place names to educate, elucidate, and even entertain. Place names are normally highly descriptive: one can easily identify and understand why a certain place has the name it does. But the real power of the place name is less in its description than in the anecdote accompanying the name. These anecdotes teach some important moral lesson. By merely invoking the name, the lesson is recalled and no one is directly humiliated, scolded, shamed. The lesson to be learned is played out by the characters in the story and hence depersonalized. In this gentle, non-threatening way, individuals are taught the important lessons of living successfully within the culture of the Western Apache. We would do well adopt this tradition into our own culture and begin training our children in ways that build up instead of ways that shame and tear down.
