The enigma continues...

Despite the comprehensive, cutting edge, research based, gathering of the minds this superb second edition still misses some basics regarding back and pelvic pain. To not include a chapter on the noxious pain of trigger points is again disappointing. Despite this, the reader can be expected to be overwhelmed with original concepts. I like the way each chapter has a fresh author, which sometimes means a conflict of ideas. One author advocates heel lifts to level the sacral base, another finds no value in this. Very thought-provoking. It is expensive, but not when you think it has taken 10+ years for a second edition.

As in many of these textbooks, there is a whole lot of same-old same-old, with interesting refreshing nuggets scattered through-out. Quite worth a read, and keep your high-light pen handy.

Young, rich wives are being kidnapped and returned unwilling to say what happened to them, so one husband hires Michael to go undercover in the world of bondage, the last victim's sister, Justine, volunteering to pose as his sub during the investigation, only the bondage games turn out to be a lot more than just for show. Interesting story illustrating the impossibility of trying to go back to the way things were, before you were introduced to something that resonated with you, socially acceptable or not. I liked Justine, she was a submissive with a little spunk, and a lot of personal strength. Aside from Charles (one of the husbands), be forewarned the men in this story are not particularly caring, tender or loyal . . . for the most part, Michael and the others are cold, and selfishly motivated. This contains vivid descriptions of dubious consent situations and rough sexual situations which may be out of some readers' comfort zone, in addition this contains a few socially taboo scenarios that may be off-putting for some. This novel was previously published as Bound for Revenge.

About the Author

Klaus Scherer, born in 1943, studied economics and social sciences at the University of Cologne and the London School of Economics. Following his postgraduate studies in psychology, he obtained a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1970. After teaching at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and the University of Kiel, Germany, he was appointed, in 1973, full professor of social psychology at the University of Giessen, Germany. From 1985 to 2008, Klaus Scherer has held the chair of emotion psychology at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, with teaching and research activities focussing on the areas of emotion, stress, motivation, personality, and organisational behaviour.

Klaus Scherer is currently the Director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research for the Affective Sciences, established by the Swiss government and the Swiss National Science Foundation, and of its leading house at the University of Geneva, the Interfaculty Centre for Affective Sciences.


Tanja Banziger studied psychology in Switzerland (Lausanne and Geneva). She obtained a PhD in the
vocal communication of emotion in 2004. For her post-doc she worked on the recognition of emotion
in face and voice. She currently teaches at Hogskola i Gavle.

Dr. Roesch started as a professional software engineer, before completing undergraduate and postgraduate studies in cognitive science. He completed his undergraduate research track record by joining the Affective Neuroscience Laboratory, at Harvard University, as a Research Assistant. In 2004, he joined Prof. Scherer's lab to pursue a PhD in psychology investigating the unfolding of attentional resource to the processing of emotionally-relevant information. In 2008, he was awarded a fellowship by the Swiss National Science Foundation to join the Computing Dept. at Imperial College, where he contributed to the development of NeMo, a modelling platform of spiking neurons using high-performance Graphics Processing Units (GPU). In 2010, he joined the Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics, on a project aiming at bridging the gaps between neuroimaging and modelling. Dr. Roesch is also an associate lecturer in Oxford Brookes University, where he teaches cognitive neuroscience.

How are we to explain this decline in public displays of aggression? What mechanisms have modernizing societies employed to repress and control violence? The increasingly strict social control of unmarried, male adolescents, together with the coercive education imposed on this age group, are central to Muchembled's explanation. Masculine violence gradually disappeared from public space, to become concentrated in the home. Meanwhile, a vast popular literature, precursor of the modern mass media, came to play a cathartic role: the duels of The Three Musketeers and the amazing exploits of Fant�mas, as described in the new crime literature invented in the nineteenth century, now helped to purge the violent impulses.

And yet we seem, in the first few years of the twenty-first century, to be witnessing a resurgence of violence, especially among the youths of the inner cities. How should we understand this resurgence in relation to the long history of violence in the West?

One of the best books on Farming ever written!

This book is amazing. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to farm, on whatever scale. Especially if you plan on making a living from it. Not only that, but it is the favorite farming book of none other than Joel Salatin himself. Need I say more?

Difficult to find, worth the effort

I found this book regularly listed among books extolled by people like Joel Salatin, Gene Logsdon, Eliot Coleman and so decided that I needed to read it too. Difficult to find. Finally stumbled upon one that didn't cost as much as the farm I hope to have and am glad I did. Basically it is the story of a young man's journey into farming in England, WW1 - WW2 era. Interesting to see the different attitudes - English/USA and also a generation or two ago to now. This man worked his way up, work being the operative word. He gained his knowledge at the hands of the experienced farmers he worked for, absorbed their teachings, sifted the wheat from the chaff (literallly & figuratively) and then started his own farm implementing what he took away from his varied work experiences. Considering the differences in the times and cultures, this isn't a treatise that will give you a step-by-step how to start up your farm here and now. But the philosophical underpinnings are worth the price of admission. There are two follow up books - Farmer's Progress and The Farming Manual, neither of which I have (yet) read. But I recently scored a used Farmer's Progress is England and am looking forward to it.

Couldn't put it down, even after finishing the book.

The bibliography in Eliot Coleman's book on organic gardening is as good as the book itself. Both Coleman and Joel Salatin rank this little pearl as one of their favorites. Henderson's book is an account of taking a run down farm and tripling its soil fertility with chickens, sheep, hogs, and cattle making it one of the highest per-acre yielding farms in England back during the early 1900's. His wit in castigating government subsidies and bureaucrats is as enjoyable as his farming wisdom. Though Henderson strongly advocated being abreast of the latest agricultural knowledge he also knew that many of his principles were timeless enough that his book would be around long after his death. Henderson's capacity for accomplishing his purposes, even in his teens, approached that of Solomon---the main difference being that Solomon started with unlimited gold and silver...Henderson and his brother started with a few year's experience and a well conceived plan. In fact, the two brothers proved Solomon's observation that "two are better than one, for they have a good return on their labor." Both his advice to farmers looking to hire help and to young people wanting to learn farming are alone worth the hefty price for such a small book. Many thanks to Henderson for writing it and to Coleman for recommending it.

Adiabatic logic is a potential successor for static CMOS circuit design when it comes to ultra-low-power energy consumption. Future development like the evolutionary shrinking of the minimum feature size as well as revolutionary novel transistor concepts will change the gate level savings gained by adiabatic logic. In addition, the impact of worsening degradation effects has to be considered in the design of adiabatic circuits. The impact of the technology trends on the figures of merit of adiabatic logic, energy saving potential and optimum operating frequency, are investigated, as well as degradation related issues. Adiabatic logic benefits from future devices, is not susceptible to Hot Carrier Injection, and shows less impact of Bias Temperature Instability than static CMOS circuits. Major interest also lies on the efficient generation of the applied power-clock signal. This oscillating power supply can be used to save energy in short idle times by disconnecting circuits. An efficient way to generate the power-clock is by means of the synchronous 2N2P LC oscillator, which is also robust with respect to pattern-induced capacitive variations. In the end, a new circuit topology has to compete with static CMOS also in productivity. On a 130nm test chip, a large scale test vehicle containing an FIR filter was implemented in adiabatic logic, utilizing a standard, library-based design flow, fabricated, measured and compared to simulations of a static CMOS counterpart, with measured saving factors compliant to the values gained by simulation. This leads to the conclusion that adiabatic logic is ready for productive design due to compatibility not only to CMOS technology, but also to electronic design automation (EDA) tools developed for static CMOS system design.

During his work at the Institute of Technical Electronics at the Technische Univerist�t M�nchen he focused on the design of circuits for ultra low-power energy consumption. Outstanding!!

If you like books on the martial arts life this is a great book. His journey thru his discipleship is so similar to those of the shaolin monks and add that to the ups and down of life. Great read! I see the same kind of stuff going thru me on my kungfu journey. I was later on in life when I found my passion for the martial arts, but could so see myself living in a martial arts school and studying full time.

I got alot from this book

Roy has written a really nice book here. If you train martial arts or are curious then you may enjoy this book.
I get the feeling that Roy has a pretty sneaky sense of humour too, a couple of times I burst out a little laugh while reading in the lunch room at work.

Roy please write another book. Thanks

Anyone interested in martial arts should read this book.Roy cleared up a couple of issues I have been thinking about in terms of effectiveness of certain martial arts.Highly recommended.
