Not a comprehensive history but still a valuable work

The first thing that must be said is not a comprehensive history of the Tiger I and II. It does not contain a complete set of pictures and line drawings, and is perhaps not the most useful source for the modeler from that standpoint. It does contain a lot of color photos of existing Tigers - at Aberdeen, Munster, Bovington, Saumur, and Fort Knox - and those pictures are worthwhile.

The interesting thing about this book is that it contains a lot of *Allied* viewpoints on the Tiger - intelligence reports and after-action reports from Americans, British, and Soviets who faced the Tiger. The author also describes all the various methods the Allies used to deal with the Tiger: aircraft, anti-tank guns, artillery, and in the Soviet case, the SU-152 and IS-2. At times there was so much emphasis on this I thought the book should have been called "Beating the Tiger".

The main German viewpoint the author draws from is Otto Carius, Tiger in the Mud.

In sum, while this might not be the best and most comprehensive book on the Tiger tanks, it is still well done and includes a lot of information I'd never seen before.

Very Comprehensive Tiger Anthology

Compared to all those other tank books, which I mostly own, this is one of the better of those. Specifically for the Tiger Tanks. Vast amounts of data on variants, pictures (most previously unpublished and lots), and specifications. Covers detail description, suspension, turrets, engines, misc category, armour, armament, smoke, ammunition, construction and layout, gearbox, tracks, weapons, vision, hatches, gun ports, ventilation, dimensions, and crew ergonomics inside the tank. This is a must have book for any tank fan!

A man and his country at the crossroads of life and death and death and life.

While I much prefer Kawabata's Snow Country, I found The Sound of the Mountain a very worthwhile read as well. Kawabata is a master of the delicate detail, the telling nuance. This novel works on a number of levels.

Most basically, it is the tale of Ogata Shingo, an aging businessman, slowly losing his faculties and descending into old age and decrepitude. He is not there yet, as he struggles to deal with his scrappy, common sensical wife, his depressed and quietly rebellious son Shuichi, his divorced and unhappy daughter Fasuko and her bratty daughter Satoko, and on the other end of the spectrum, his beautiful, dutiful, half in love with him daughter in law, Kikuko. Even the dog Teru has a role to play as she efficiently brings five pups into the world who are eventually given away. The action is quiet, almost non-existent, as the family eats meals, worries about the cherry trees and other flora, as well as fauna in the yard, and learns to adjust to Fasuko's divorce and Kikuko and Shuichi's rocky start to their marriage.

Shingo tries to deal with this with all the clarity that he can muster, but he is far from perfect. His own marriage is dogged by his constant harking back to the fact that he was originally attracted to his wife's much more attractive sister, who unfortunately died. Shingo in that and other things lacks sufficient clarity of thought and feeling. He tries to apply the Confucian and other endemic principles imbued in him in a world that is changing before his eyes. His own emotional make up causes difficulties, as he is drawn to Kikuko, at the same time that she is drawn to him emotionally, but he is much too fine a man to become physically involved with his daughter in law (as is she). But the pull is always there and most delicately rendered by Kawabata.

All of this is rendered against a backdrop of a nation, ethnic group and culture putting the shards of life back together after the crushing, humiliating defeat of World War II. I have never seen any writing that gives one more insight into the visceral disappointment, humiliation and dislocation that the outcome of the war visited upon the Japanese.

As painful as it is, we see the family struggling to adjust to the new ways and the new life they face in the 1950s. As Shingo feels his own death and the death of old Japan approaching, we see the following generation, scarred by the war, yet moving ahead into a less formal, more down to earth future.

All of this is rendered by a master of the telling detail. The reader can sense the depth of Kikuko and Shingo's feelings for each other--yet in the 270 pages of this edition they never touch each other passionately or express other than the most respectful of father-daughter sentiment. Yet the cauldron boils underneath. For Kawabata a few strokes of the pen do what most writers cannot achieve in a lengthy chapter.

The insights of a great artist, showing us the inner life of a few individuals, yet exemplifying the forces driving an entire nation in a trying time.

A great read, had me wishing it was longer!

The sound of the mountain's title made me believe that the sound ( the main characters feeling of looming death of old age) would be a large section of the book but the show here gets stolen by the relationships that shingo the main character forms and changes.

The growing closeness in between his son's wife and himself are what makes this story enjoyable to read about, this story is honest yet sweet. it's not overly dramatic in its events, and manages to still be a book that has you at the edge of your seat as to what happens next in this plethora of changing relationships. The book is great but those who like epic novels and the like will most likely be bored here, but make no doubt, this story is both frightening with shingo's growing strains with his wife and son and his fear of death but also perplexing yet heartwarming growing relationship with his husband's wife. He secretly lusts after her yet he has tremendous growing respect for her. Seeing this develop had me at the edge of my seat.

I would definitely Recomend this great story and the book itself comes in a decently compact size which I prefer and best of all with a decently sized font that won't strain the eyes, If your looking for a interesting story with with interesting characters and dynamic relationships then pick this up!

Impossible to get to literature through mistakes (Kindle edition!)

The story, like any by the writer, is subtle and layered. However, the edition was full of mistakes and mistypes. Up to the point where there were 3-4 mistakes in a page. Trying to report them, I was constantly switching between book pages and content error pages. Sad.

Good Book, Not Outstanding

This book is good but it just didn't seem to keep my interest up throughout the book. But then again, I'm not an avid reader either. It did make you stop and examine yourself and your motives in your marriage. It also made you thing about how God views marriage vs how today's society looks at it and has cheapened its meaning to "what's in it for me." Overall it was a good book.

but it gives a MUCH better perspective of marriage and how to cope and even ...

This book is not a normal marriage book. Normal marriage books focus on "fixing" the marriage, and they only work if both partners are willing to put in effort. I have read so many that I want to throw out the window because of that. THIS book is the truth. It won't "fix" your marriage, but it gives a MUCH better perspective of marriage and how to cope and even thrive in a painful marriage. It's about taking responsibility for yourself, regardless of what your spouse is doing, and how God works in your life no matter what. Highly, highly recommended for all couples, and even pre-marriage.

I did enjoy it, but it just wasn't one of those ...

I started this book, and admittedly have not finished it (hopefully someday I will). Having only become a Christian recently and not really having a background where I'm familiar with scripture, this was a little bit too scripture-ally based for my tastes. I did enjoy it, but it just wasn't one of those books that you "just can't put down." Unfortunately I put it down and haven't picked it back up.

An Alien Non Human Perspective Story

The Demon of Cliffside is a very interesting story mostly because I don't know how to classify it.

It is adventure, with some mystery. Yet the main character is so... alien that you can't relate to them. The story kept me guessing and the twists were very unexpected.

The world it builds is detailed and unique. You can see how the world came to be the way it is with the physical laws it has.

I really enjoyed this story and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys their fantasy stories a bit different than usual.

While the opening chapters were a little slow, probably due to the fantastic amount of world building therein, it picked up quickly and, once it hit its stride, held my attention clear through the end. There were a couple of twists I expected and a couple more I certainly had not. Overall, it left me wanting more and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in fantasy/adventure.

Hilarious and serious; useful for post college, too

Though it would initially seem aimed at applying to undergraduate schools, "On Writing the College Application Essay" is excellent for essay writing in general (including MBA applications :-).
The first half emphasizes the importance of knowing your audience. Although we're inclined to think nobel laureates will pore over our applications, the reality is they're screened by the Sarah Bleary and Henry Haggards of the world: real folks who see so many applications, that they struggle to differentiate them.
Knowing your audience is only one part of the equation. In the essay, you must convince the reader that you're YOU. Instead, many applicants portray themselves based on what they think the admissions committee wants, often to the extent of sweeping banalities. Bauld explores several of these with his sharp wit. Perhaps the funniest is Pet Death: "As I watched Buttons' life ebb away, I came to value the important things in this world."
In the second half, Bauld suggests you take a chill pill, then start keeping a notebook of any ideas an observations -- anything. Eventually you'll start to relax enough that your writing will come alive. However, before it can come alive, you must get something on paper.
You'll continuously refine and tighten your opus, and the author gives several suggestions of how to approach this, with examples of first, second and third drafts.
Finally, Bauld includes several different essays, a few from college applications, and most not. Each of these conveys a different style but illustrates the crux of the book: you gotta be you.

Excellent resource and easy to read

I've read several books on the college application process and it is clear that the essay plays a major role in determining whether or not an applicant is accepted. Mr. Bauld has written an entertaining, informative and very easy-to-read book that is also thankfully short. No long-winded, self-congratulatory filler here! It gets right to the point and is generous with excellent examples. In fact, this book is a great resource not only for those prepping to write a college application essay, but it contains great advice for writers in general. This book is well worth its reasonable price for the ideas, motivation and examples it provides. Now I need to get a clue from Mr. Bauld and keep this short and to the point. Bye.

Understand essay process & write one that shows the real you

This book gives an excellent and easy to read look at writing your college application essay. If you are just going to read a book and not do the exercises, this is a great choice - it doesn't have any exercises. Instead, the emphasis is on finding your own voice and telling your story. For example, he gives a list of the most overused, deadly topics and then shows how you can write a really good essay on one of the "forbidden" topics. He also includes a number of sample essays with comments from real college admissions officers - so you can see for yourself the difference between good, bad and mediocre.

Ranajit Guha—intellectual founder of the groundbreaking and influential Subaltern Studies Group—describes from the peasants’ viewpoint the relations of dominance and subordination in rural India from 1783 to 1900.
Challenging the idea that peasants were powerless agents who rebelled blindly against British imperialist oppression and local landlord exploitation, Guha emphasizes their awareness and will to effect political change. He suggests that the rebellions represented the birth of a theoretical consciousness and asserts that India’s long subaltern tradition lent power to the landmark insurgence led by Mahatma Gandhi. Yet as long as landlord authority remains dominant in a ruling culture, Guha claims, all mass struggles will tend to model themselves after the unfinished projects documented in this book.
