Since the second edition of Seinfeld and Pandis’ classic textbook, significant progress has taken place in the field of atmospheric chemistry and physics, particularly in the areas of tropospheric chemistry, aerosols, and the science of climate change.  A new edition of this comprehensive work has been developed by the renowned author team. Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 3rd Edition, as the previous two editions have done, provides a rigorous and comprehensive treatment of the chemistry and physics of the atmosphere – including the chemistry of the stratosphere and troposphere, aerosol physics and chemistry, atmospheric new particle formation, physical meteorology, cloud physics, global climate, statistical analysis of data, and mathematical chemical/transport models of the atmosphere.  Each of these topics is covered in detail and in each area the central results are developed from first principles. In this way the reader gains a significant understanding of the science underlying atmospheric processes and will be able to extend theories and results to solving real world problems.

The 3rd edition includes new chapters on Atmospheric Organic Aerosols and Global Climate, as well as a significantly updated chapter on Physical Meteorology.  Many chapters and topics have been updated and expanded from the Second Edition, including the Chemistry of Biogenic Hydrocarbons in the Troposphere, especially Isoprene Chemistry; Aqueous-Phase Organic Chemistry; mechanisms of Nucleation in the Atmosphere; Aerosol-Cloud relationships; and Chemistry of Mercury.  A new section on Positive Matrix Factorization is included that carefully develops this powerful statistical method for aerosol data analysis.

New problems have been added, especially ones at a basic level, to increase the utility of this text in classroom situations.

All chapters develop results based on fundamental principles, enabling the reader to build a solid understanding of the science underlying atmospheric processes. Readers familiar with the book will discover a text with many new and revised additions.

Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 3rd Edition is an ideal textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a reference for researchers in environmental and atmospheric science, chemistry, meteorology, , and civil and environmental engineering.

John H. Seinfeld is Louis E. Nohl Professor at the California Institute of Technology.  He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology, the NASA Public Service Award, the Nevada Medal, the Fuchs Award, and the 2012 Tyler Prize.

Spyros N. Pandis is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Patras, Greece, and Research Professor of Chemical Engineering and Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University.  He is the recipient of the Whitby Award by the American Association for Aerosol Research and the European Research Council Advanced Investigator IDEAS award. He is a Fellow of the American Association for Aerosol Research.

Becca lives in Southern California with her husband and baby girl. She has had a love for dragons since she was very young, doodling them on everything she could get her hands on, and has carried that love into her artistic career as a full-time professional sculptor through the self-owned company Dragon and Beasties. While she focuses mainly on sculpting, she also enjoys illustrating her ideas. The goal with her artwork is simply to uplift and bring a smile to people of all ages.

It's not that cheap, almost waxy paper that is almost impossible to color on. Classic text of analysis

This is a classic analysis text from french mathematician edouard goursat. This books covers topics such as integration, differential equation and multiple integral and etc. The proof are rigorous, and the development of proofs are much more make sense than today's delta-epsilon proofs. You could see the theorems in the book are proved in a much more natural and intellectual way. Of course delta-epsilon could bring you a "rigorous" proof too, but somethimes the development of the proof is just so awkward.

she didn't disappoint. I was thinking

Omg...I was wondering how Mama T. Styles of the Twisted Babies was going to pull this off. Especially since we are about 5 books into the Raunchy Series or at least parts of it. Well, she didn't disappoint. I was thinking, what would this book be without Harmony or how was she going to write this book without Harmony being the focus but she did an excellent job. First of all, all of the characters were off the chain. We learned more about them then we learned from their previous appearances in the first books. I learned to understand them, love them and hate them all at the same time. I felt bad for some that I loathed previously. Most importantly though, was Kalive aka Kali. He had such a rough start with no stability yet he was such a lovable child. Unfortunately, we all knew how he would turn out. It was like torture knowing what he would become.On the other hand, I am so happy that T. Styles showed the human aspect of those we would consider monsters. It goes to show that people need love good or bad and love can change things if it is available. 5 Stars to our Twisted Mommy!!!!!!!!!

Another Twisted Tale

What can I say except strictly amazing. This book had me feeling all types of emotions. Learning about Kali and his past made me look back at different people in my life. Often killers and kids that grow up too fast have a reason behind they're madness. Reading this proved just that. I was really rooting for Bernice, especially when she tried to get clean. Unfortunately she was just as ratchet as Harmony. I know that the author won't leave us hanging because I gotta find out exactly what Jaden is hiding. A couple times I had to re read something because of word Order, but other then that this was an awesome read.

I loved the bond that Kristen and Kali had

As a fan of the author's work I didn't expect anything less than extraordinary. Kali lived a life that no one would want to envy. This gives back story to how similar his childhood is to Harmony's and why they bonded and created Madjesty. Those that are fans of the Raunchy series will see some familiar names and situations. I loved the bond that Kristen and Kali had. I loved how everything flowed nicely. There were no loose ends and it seems that there's room for yet another installment. I hope so because I enjoyed it a great deal.

Steve Neal has collected, in Eleanor and Harry, the correspondence between Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. The 254 letters were written between April 16, 1945 (four days after FDR's death), and mid-December, 1960 (23 months before Eleanor Roosevelt's death). While many of the letters are brief and quotidian, a good number of them concern large issues, both global and national, among them the restoration of post-war Europe; the Korean War; the role and effectiveness of the nascent United Nations (Roosevelt served the Truman administration as a member of the U.S. delegation to the General Assembly); the fraught, mercurial jostling of the cold war; and Democratic Party appointments. Though the two hardly saw eye-to-eye on all issues, their letters were unfailingly respectful. Neal provides a context for many of these letters, which he arranges chronologically. As well, he has written a brief introduction and epilogue, and a helpful, if basic, bibliography. --H. O'Billovich

Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman enjoyed a relationship unique in American history. Virtually strangers before the death of FDR, afterward the two became close friends and began exchanging letters on everything from their health and the weather to Democratic politics and global communism. Now, in this collection of over 250 of their letters ably edited and introduced by Chicago Sun-Times political columnist Neal (Harry and Ike), the full extent of their friendship finally becomes apparent. Truman, Neal makes clear, admired Mrs. Roosevelt greatly, calling her the "First Lady of the World." She, in turn, thought he was a "good man" and wanted to help him however she could. But the two also disagreed on many issues, and Mrs. Roosevelt was never shy about expressing her opinion. In her letters, she rebuked Truman for the "loyalty boards" designed to root out communists (he later agreed with her) and shamed him into investigating discrimination against Japanese-Americans. For his part, Truman staunchly defended his support of noncommunist regimes in Greece and Turkey (the beginnings of the "Truman Doctrine") and delicately asserted that she was too naive about Stalinist Russia. Yet Truman also trusted Mrs. Roosevelt immensely, and told her things he could tell few others ("The difficulties with Churchill are very nearly as exasperating as they are with the Russians," he wrote after the frustrating negotiations to end the war). On her end, Mrs. Roosevelt never hesitated to offer kindness and support. "My congratulations on your courage... you have done the right thing," she wrote to Truman after he fired General MacArthur. These are letters without parallel. As Neal points out, just try to imagine Jacqueline Kennedy and LBJ writing these letters, or George H.W. Bush and Nancy Reagan. This collection is a valuable contribution to early Cold War scholarship, as well as a fascinating window into two titanic figures in American history.

They were an odd match, the former First Lady who would have preferred to leave the White House after two terms and the accidental president who had not initially sought the presidency. In more than 250 letters between Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman from 1945 through 1960, readers encounter the active and flexible personalities behind both correspondents, who often differed but eventually grew to admire each other. Neal, a political columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, former White House correspondent, and author of five books, including Harry and Ike: The Partnership That Remade the Postwar World, uncovered these unpublished letters while working on that volume. He inserts useful introductory remarks throughout the text, which is arranged chronologically, and also provides brief epilogs. Truman appointed the former First Lady as a delegate to the United Nations to shore up his support among liberal Democrats. Though she often came close to resigning, he took pride in making her "the First Lady of the World," a title Eisenhower tried to deny her but could not, just as he could not deny that Truman would become a folk hero to many including Republicans. He was a farm boy, the descendant of Missouri pioneers. She was a debutante of the New York aristocracy. On April 12th, 1945, her husband and his boss, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, died in office. Mrs. Roosevelt summoned Vice-president Truman to the White House and said, "Harry, the president is dead." "Is there anything I can do for you?" he asked, and Mrs. Roosevelt replied, "Is there anything we can do you? For you are the one in trouble now."

Thus begins a correspondence that will last until their deaths, here collected by editor Steve Neal to give the reader a top-of-the-heap, behind-the-headlines look at the end of World War II, the Marshall Plan, the creation of the state of Israel, public versus private schooling, Eleanor's opinion of the British (not high, wait till you see how she tells Harry to handle Churchill), Harry's opinion of American hate crimes against Japanese Americans (he's damn lucky this letter wasn't released to the public back then), and much more. Eleanor is at first a little patronizing, a little arrogant, and more than a little disingenuous in many protestations of "oh you don't have listen to little old me, but as long as you are..." Harry is at first a little defensive, a little impatient, and more than a little dismissive of Eleanor's opinions, particular of people she wants in office and he doesn't. By his second term, Harry has grown into his new job, Eleanor has grown into hers, and they both grow into what eventually reads like a friendship of sincere mutual respect and even affection.

A great book to read following a Truman biography

This book is a compilation of letters exchanged between Harry Truman and Eleanor Roosevelt during Truman's presidency. The book has an easy-to-read style largely because the author adds dialog to explain the situations, events, and results of what the letters mention. By using this dialog-letter combination, a great deal of history is presented in an entertaining manner.
I would highly recommend this book as a followup immediately after reading the biography Truman, by David McCullough. With a little bit of Truman history, not only will you find this book a great source of behind the scenes information, you'll also discover that the letters written by Eleanor Roosevelt are a joy to read. She was truly a gifted writer with the ability to put emotions and thoughts into the written word in a manner that could be described as artistic.

Steve Neal has compiled some 250 letters between Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman when he took office after the death of Franklin Roosevelt. In this small but thoughtful book, Neal combines commentary pertinent to the times or to the letter itself. While they disagreed on many things, he repeatedly asked her to write to him with her thoughts on events of the day, which she did and with great candor. President Truman was the first to call Mrs. Roosevelt "First Lady of the World." I heartily recomment this book to those who wish to know these two great people a bit better.

Mainly for gold bugs

Although this book delivers some interesting insights, it is in essence just the usual gold bug manual mainly written for gold fans who want to confirm their conviction that gold is going to rise. True believers will certainly know most of the points.

The empirical price model is the interesting part. The author suggests to buy gold when the gold price is lower then the fair value the model derives.

The author uses only a few macroeconomic variables; too many variables can fit any curve. There is logic in his formula, but that does not guarantee a reasonable prediction of the future. To arrive at his long term forecast he makes strong assumptions far into the future. For instance the S&P is assumed to stagnate till 2021. That is quite possible, but who knows, maybe it doubles in that 7 years. Sovereign debt is assumed to grow 11% per year. At least the Clinton years have shown that there is no law of nature of ever growing sovereign debt. His long term forecast to 2021 is therefore not really a forecast but instead a scenario.

The part about analyzing bubbles is in my humble opinion outright nonsense. He states that a bubble has 2 boom phases (boom 1, correction, boom 2 or blowoff) and that there are well established ratios between the duration and the height of boom 1 and the blowoff boom. Boom 1 for gold was 2001 to 2011, boom 2 is yet to come. I sincerely doubt that forecasting bubbles is that easy.

A compelling argument for Investing in Gold

A short but worthwhile read. If you are invested already this should give you much needed hope.
The paperback version is probably not needed I recommend the Kindle version for cheapness.

This ambitious but technically unsophisticated first entry in a series features street-wise New Yorker Neal Carey, a 23-year-old graduate student of 18th-century literature. Neal is directed by Friends of the Family, a discreet, private investigation agency for which he works, to find Allie Chase, the teenage, drug-addicted daughter of a U.S. senator and presidential hopeful. Allie is somewhere in England and must be returned to the States before the Democratic Convention nine weeks away. Neal finds Allie but is forced to use his cunning to bring her home; at the same time he suspects someone from the agency is trying to kill him. Winslow guides us on a tour of punk 1976 London and introduces some colorful characters. But this first novel loses much of its punch because Winslow overloads beginning chapters with his hero's personal history rather than pacing the plot with relevant details. Neal is a distant hero whose escapades seem artificially linked.

excellent debut

This is a brisk, immensely enjoyable updating of the private eye and noir genres. When we first meet Neal Carey he's a graduate student at Columbia, working on a degree in 18th Century English Literature. But then he receives a call from his "Dad," Joe Graham, who turns out to be the one-armed dwarf who sort of adopted Neal when he was eleven years old and running the streets. A series of flashbacks shows Graham teaching Neal how to survive and grooming him for an eventual position trouble shooting for a shadowy organization called Friends of the Family, who look after the interests of the wealthy clients of the Kitteridge family bank in Providence, RI. Over the years, Neal learned everything from how to tail people to how to search a room without anyone ever knowing, and in the course of these unusual studies, Joe realized that Neal was a gifted student. Eventually the Friends send him to school, but now they need him for a special assignment.
It's 1976 and with Jimmy Carter likely to win the Democratic presidential nomination, he's expected to look for a northern running mate. Senator John Chase of Rhode Island has a decent shot at the job, but there's one significant skeleton in his closet : his troublesome teenage daughter has run away to London. Now it's up to Neal to go find her and bring her back in time for the Convention.
Neal is a streetwise and sassy hero, which makes for plenty of snappy banter. And the London he arrives in is in the midst of the birth of punk rock, which provides an unusually anarchic backdrop to the action. Add in a priceless first edition of Tobias Smollett's The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle and a double-crosser within the Friends and you've got a mystery that cleverly mixes elements of classic noir with various innovations of the author's own. Imagine Oliver Twist by way of Raymond Chandler with a soundtrack by The Clash, and you'll capture something of the spirit of the story. It all makes for great fun and I look forward to reading the subsequent books in the series.

A Must Must Must Read!

This is a fabulous book, introducing the reader to fascinating characters (Neal Carey, Joe Graham, etc). As the first in a series of Neal Carey mysteries, this is the perfect book to drag you in and hook you, leaving you wanting more. The story is fascinating, and the driving plot makes this a page-turner. And how can you not fall in love with these charatcters?This is one of the best detective mysteries I've read, and I reccommend it to ALL my friends. READ IT!

How can a first book be this good?

Don Winslow's debut novel is scary good. The writing is completely self-assured. The comedic moments and sarcasm are well constructed. And he has created an interesting and hugely appealing main character for a series, and surrounded him with several interesting back plots and secondary characters.

This is a book that will teach you a lot. You'll learn things you didn't know about 18th century English literature, how to tail someone and not get caught, the best way to score drugs in London, and the finer points of picking a load for a shotgun. It will also show you that Don Winslow is a master at scattering gems like that through a book with a fast moving plot, richly drawn characters, and a very good sense of place.

I've read several other books by Winslow. I especially liked The Winter of Frankie Machine, California Fire and Life, and The Power of the Dog. I backtracked my way into the Neal Carey series and was amazed to find that his debut novel is as good as any of his best works.

I don't know how someone comes out of the starting gate with such a well-written first effort, but Winslow has done it. Bravo. I recommend this highly.

Dissapointing Rehash of Other, Better Books

I was excited when I purchased this book. I have read numerous titles in this genre, like Blink, Predictably Irrational, Influence, etc., and I was looking forward to more ineresting insights and anecdotes.

Unfortunately, almost the entire book has been covered (in more detail) by the books mentioned above.

I felt like I was reading a cliff's notes version of these previous works, with dumber (but warm!) authors.

If the book was just a regurgitation, I would let it slide. But, in some cases, the authors miss the point entirely.

For instance, when they are discussing the placebo effect, they mention the fact that "Prozac had about the same theapeutic effect" as a placebo (page 97).

They continue that although "the SSRI drugs are clinically ineffective, psychiatrists nevertheless kept diagnosing and prescribing. Once even the most seasoned professionals begin diagnosing, it's very hard to stop." (page 97 cont).

With a wave of the hand, the effectiveness of Prozac is disproven.

Or is it?

If these guys had bothered to read "13 Things That Dont Make Sense" by Michael Brooks, they might have uncovered the REALLY INTERESTING THING about Prozac and the placebo effect.

But no, instead they choose to become examples of the very diagnostic bias that they advocate against.

This is one example. There are many, many more.

Sorry guys... you seem like nice fellows. But c'mon... if you are going to write a book, at least write one I haven't read before.

For any of the readers out there interested in original work, I recommend passing on this one and checking out some of these titles. They are MUCH better:

a decent book-let

This is yet a another volume in the contemporary genre of books based on a single insight. In this case, the insight is that people often make predictably irrational decisions. This is interesting, and the authors assemble several anecdotes supporting their thesis, but a bit of judicious editing could have distilled their argument into a brief essay. Of course this would have been a less profitable format; one suspects the authors of exploiting an irrational bias favoring books over articles.

A Magnetic Read (I've Been Swayed)

I've always considered myself pragmatic, logical, and clearly even-keeled. Then, I read Ori and Rom's book Sway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior. It's a magnetic read and I zipped through it in 2 quick sittings.

I rather like books that make me think twice about truths I hold self-evident. And Sway certainly made me think. Did I pre-judge my employees based on what others had said about them, or their previous jobs? Do I make rash (and possibly dangerous or stupid) choices when I'm committed to a certain plan of action and feel any diversion would be a loss? I certainly look for fairness in my business and personal transactions. But is fairness the key metric? Maybe not.

The book has opened my eyes and mind to new ways of approaching my business activities and relationships and family interactions. Hopefully I will recognize in advance a moment where I might act rash or choose the wrong -- irrational -- path and think again about my choices.
