Arguing that social relations can be interpreted from the mundane practice of everyday life, Eckert shows how the relationship between ethnicity, migration, and ritual practice combined to create a complexly patterned material culture among residents of two fourteenth-century Pueblo villages. Focusing specifically on the social boundaries that existed between immigrant and local Pueblo groups, she argues that tensions between these groups were articulated in potters' decisions of how to make and decorate their vessels. After providing the archaeological and temporal context of her study, Eckert defines communities of practice and communities of identity within Pottery Mound and Hummingbird Pueblo, and then examines these communities in light of migration and ritual practice.

John Reed was the kind of man who, one instant, might touch you to your very core -- send a symphony into the marrow of your bones. But he was also the type who, the next instant, might prove exasperatingly shallow. Such was his sad contradiction. There he'd be reciting something truly something -- but reciting it at the exclusive room of the trendiest possible of-the-second club to an audience of those beautiful and ambitious New Yorkers who, though not always successful at it, were the most "willing, " in the name of glory, to lead lives unexamined and vapid.
His tragic and untimely demise unfolded at a juncture when I was most disgusted with him -- for not a month earlier, his reprehensible behavior had ended our relationship. One that had seemed riddled...well, with potential.
He could be a boy sometimes, standing as he would have in 1977, a child of the Manhattan wasteland -- a body filthy and lean, and trying to discover for itself honor in the void. This aspect of his work had been of interest to me. And since, during the course of our romance, we discussed our writing with each other, I became quite familiar with his proposal for "Duh Whole" -- the tale of a girl gone awry, and a great big hole. Hence, it was not unexpectedly (the prospect of finishing the unfinished works of expired authors ever-tempting) that I was approached the very minute John first coughed (with luck, it'd be a foreshadowing of consumption and doom). His outline proved surprisingly complete, and having no book deal of my own, I was soon secured in the effort -- and with John's institutionalization and rapid decline, I was given the green light. If you like my work, you might look for other novels ostensibly by Reed, such as "Snowball's Chance" and "A Still Small Voice, " which, incidentally, I also wrote.

Classic Work on its Era

This book has been notorious since its publication in 1914. The author was a vagabond leftist reporter for the American radical press, and did not go to Mexico City riding in relative comfort on the press train accompanying the Division del Norte of General Francisco "Pancho" Villa during his successful Constitutionalist southward campaign against the Federalista forces of the usurper General Victoriano Huerta; he who had murdered president Madero and his vice president, and seized power in Mexico City in conjunction the forces of Zapata.
Instead, Reed, in accord with his common man leanings, while on campaign, lived among the "grunts", Mexican campesinos who made up the bulk of Villa's forces.
There are incisive pen portraits of the Constitutionalist leaders, descriptions of the wretched living conditions of the people, observations on the siege of Torr�on, N.L.. and nearby Gomez Palacio, neighboring key strategic cities on the railroad south from Juarez to Mexico City.
This is not history or reporting but a collection of impressionistic and justifiably biased essays. Still very valuable for the feel of the times and has been translated into many languages. The author later went to Russia and wrote "Ten Days That Shook the World." (c.f.) about the October Revolution.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

In this account of his adventures in the advance to Mexico City with Pancho Villa's armies, John Reed gives an excellent account of what it was like to have been there. Luckily enough for him, historians, and adventure lovers alike, he was on the winning side and survived to tell his tale. His tale is his aspect of the venture among the soldiers who fought the battles, rode the trains, suffred the hardships of civil war, and tasted the glow of victories won on the way to the capitol city. It's gritty, putrid, rough and tumble and the food isn't great but at the end you get a heck of a kick from surviving it all.

Do not buy the General Books edition!!!

Do yourself a favor and do not purchase Insurgent Mexico as published by General Books. Please look further since this is a great book and should be read as intended by the author, not as published by General Books. Entire sections of the book are missing, the spelling is atrocious and the typeface unreadable. According to General Books, "we have recreated this book from the original using Optical Character Recognition software to keep the cost of the book as low as possible. Therefore, could you please forgive any spelling mistakes, missing or extraneous characters that may have resulted from smudged or worn pages?" Evidently I am not forgiving enough, especially since the book is available at a reasonable cost from other publishers. Caveat emptor!

Phantasy, the bsis of artificial reality

Steiner begins his Introduction with "`phantasy' or `unconscious phantasy' as it started to be used in the late 1920s and 1930s to differentiate it from `fantasy' (daydreaming) is one of the most important concepts of psychoanalysis. Fundamentally, `phantasy' is the internalizing of an event where the internal representation may not comport with the factual circumstances. `Phantasy' is very important versus childhood, especially with how a child's imagination is formed by `unconscious phantasy'. This volume includes 7 papers beginning with Freud's paper "Formulations on the two principles of mental functioning", and concludes Segal's paper "Imagination, play and art". Of special note is Freud's "Formulations" paper - read any of the many narratives about Working Memory and the Executive and you will note the core concepts are equal. This means that either the current writings about Working Memory and the Executive duplicate Freud's "Formulations" on a blind basis, or that Freud's work has been compromised (plagiarism?) - Freud bashing suggests the latter.

Not Just for Millennials!

“Are you a special snowflake? Do you love networking to advance your career? Have you never wasted a fresh new day surfing the internet? Ugh. This book is not for you. Please go away.

“This book is for the rest of us. These comics document the wasting of entire beautiful weekends on the internet, the unbearable agony of holding hands on the street with a gorgeous guy, dreaming all day of getting home and back into pajamas, and wondering when, exactly, this adulthood thing begins. In other words, the horrors and awkwardness of young modern life.”

I’m 37 years old (emphasis on OLD) and am still waiting for the day when it feels like I’ve crossed over into adulthood. My lack of human kids doesn’t help, but you’d think my dog kids (both rescue and foster) would help get me at least halfway there. But I prefer sweatpants to jeans (skirts and slacks, what?), never carry a purse (though will stoop to a tote bag if absolutely necessary, like when begging fistfuls of free sample meds from the dermatologist), and wear sports bras exclusively (but only if I must). Last summer our water got shut off for a day because I didn’t realize that the city, in its infinite wisdom (i.e. laziness), had ceased its direct deposit payment plan and now requires all bills to be paid by cash or check. I have a bachelor’s degree that’s probably too old to mean anything anymore, and am still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up/with my life.

In short, Sarah Andersen might be a Millennial, but I can still relate to much of what’s in ADULTHOOD IS A MYTH.

The cartoons are pretty rad, in an understated way, and reminiscent of HYPERBOLE AND A HALF (though maybe with less depression and melancholy). If you’re not already familiar with Sarah’s Scribbles, there’s a tumblr you can check out to get the feel for it. Warning: you will find yourself in a bottomless timesuck of the sort that Andersen’s likely to write about.

This book would make an excellent gift for a) new college graduates; b) your partner who would rather spend New Year’s bingeing on Netflix and takeout than putting on pants/a happy face and venturing out into the world; c) your friend the perpetual man- (or woman-) child; d) anyone who has a pulse.

This just came in the mail and I had to read the whole thing. I love and appreciate this comic. I can relate to her character in so many ways, and she's cute. I am so excited Sarah Andersen put this book together.

Problem solving for Olympians

The Yaglom geometric transformation books are aimed at a mathematical Olympiad audience. The books are not primarily about transformations, they are mainly about how to use transformations to solve problems. Yaglom wrote the book in Russian back in the fifties, presenting geometrical transformations techniques to geometric problem solving. He introduces transformation types and then shows how they can be used to solve problems that otherwise would sometimes be almost unsolvable using elementary (synthetic) methods. Then he presents a set of problems that vary from difficult to fiendish. Full solutions are provided, you will need them. The Russian book has chapters on congruence, similarity and projective transformations that are contained in the three English translations published by the MAA. It continues with sections on inversion transformations that are not (yet?) translated into English.

This is the first of three books, it deals with congruence transformations. Examples of congruence transformations are reflections in a line or in a point and translations (parallel movements). One could make up a set of problems that can be solved by simply applying a convenient transformation, but that is not how Yaglom works. Most problems use one ore more other themes (tricks) besides a transformation. So let this not be your first geometry problem book.

Excellent step-by-step introduction to transformations

This book (first of three) is an excellent step-by-step introduction to some geometric transformations (in this volume: translations, reflections, and rotations) in the synthetic style (i.e., no algebra). The exercises are very good and full solutions are given to all. Lots of drawings to make everything easy to understand.

I'm using this book to 'reintroduce' myself to geometry after being away from the study of mathematics for many years and it is great fun.

As part of the New Mathematical Library it is ideal for the advanced high school student or the enthusiast/amateur (like me).

UPDATE December 2009: Great news! Volume 4, on inversions in a circle was just published and is excellent! Geometric Transformations IV: Circular Transformations (New Mathematical Library)

This is an excellent introduction to geometric transformations. It is very useful for Competitions such as the AIME USAMO and IMO. Also, it is a great book for those interested in Mathematics.

I loved this book. It contains some good stories and wonderful poetry, which is my favorite. I love Ken's poetry. We are proud to know this local author and enjoy knowing some of settings he included in his poetry.
