Can only scroll down to a book and not chapters in the book.

I love the way that QR codes within the text allow you to see videos by Dr Gets on hundreds of Biblical topics. The weakness in the Kindle version is the inability to go directly to a chapter from the table of contents (TOC). You can go from the TOC to any book. However, from there you have to progress forward or backward page at a time to chapters and verse. This is very time consuming. I have five other Kindle Bibles, and all of them allow you to go directly from the TOC to any chapter within any book. If this is fixed, I will love this Bible.

Incredible Study Bible for the Technology Guru!

So when I picked up this Bible in a Christian bookstore around Thanksgiving 2011, I knew I needed to own it someday. My iPhone 4S has a QR reader app on it and I immediately began playing around with it as I perused this Bible. The video links all work flawlessly and Dr. Gene Getz is a great speaker. He's not overly excitable or even eloquent, but he certainly gets the point across and uses real life illustrations to do so. Each of the 1,500 points scattered throughout the Bible are derived straight from Scripture as you read, and each verse that the point touches on is already highlighted for you, for focused study. The Bible even comes with a free Life Essentials QR scanning app that replaces a default QR scanner. This app includes ALL the video links by Bible Book already, in case you want to simply go through them chronologically or however you wish to study. The app works perfectly and even follows your progress by checking off videos you've already watched, and you can even tag your favorites as such for quick reference to find later.

Overall, this Bible has been an immense and valuable resource for my personal study, and my church's pastor even wants to take a look at it. Technology, when used properly, is an amazing tool for the Christian, and this Bible is leaps and bounds ahead of any other study Bible to date (which is difficult to admit because I have a growing collection of inspiring study Bibles).

All you need in a Bible and more!

Gene visited our church a few years back. I really enjoyed hearing the views he has on the Bible. While visiting he introduced our church to the Life Essentials Study Bible.

I took a few minutes to thumb through his version amd I was amazed bt the information it it. The links to videos where he explains the passages in more detail. The summary of each book and the meanings behind the context were remarkable; however, I had just purchased a new KJV version with thumb index and did not want to spend an additional $80.

So I passed it over. However over the next year I found myself going back to it in the stores and looking it up online. I later found it on Kindle. Still it was too much for me to purchase for myself. Relatives birthdays came up and I felt the need to buy one for them. I purchased two harback editions on sale between $25 -$35. Yet i could not purchase one for myself.

I downloaded the Kindle sample and started to fall in love with it. It was hard to navigate and I saw so many people complain about how to search for the books of the Bible and that there wasn't a table of contents so I kept passing ot over. Today I find the Kindle edition on sale for $2.99 so I go for it and very glad I did. The interaction on the Kindle edition was far better than the sample depicted and I found that there IS on fact a table of contents which can be accessed through your Kindle menu. In the menu it brings you to the book you are reading and with a few turn on the pages like the real thing you can locate you verse easily. I am very happy I made this purchase and thankful the price came down on it.

The Stage Lighting Handbook is an excellent start for those new to stage lighting. Starting with an overview of the types of lights the book progresses to the basics of rigging and planning lights for events. Packed full of diagrams and to-the-point explanations this handbook makes an great choice for the beginner and a reference for the more experienced lighting designer.

This book is a good overview of lighting design and lighting tech. The writing is frank and honest, the information is well-organized. I use it frequesntly as a designer to remind myself of things I might otherwise forget from time to time, or to get new ideas for how to light for this style. It is just an overview, and while it is highly practical, I would hardly call it comprehensive. Chapter titles include: Aims in Lighting, Lighting Instruments, First Steps in Lgihting Design, Color, The Lighting Design Process, Lighting Opera, lighting Thrust Stages, Agenda for a Post-Mortem, Projection and Effects, and Light Education. This book is sort of like a letter from one experienced lighting designer to a fresh-faced lighting designer, unlike many stagecraft books. It does have the UK slant, as another reviewer mentioned, but that shouldn't be a great hindrance. If you have 10 books about lighting design, this should be one of them.

Basic, simple, reference book

This book does an extremely good gob of covering the basics of lighting design. It also includes a lot of pretty pictures and diagrams. I think the most useful part of the book is the appendix section, with gel conversion charts, beam and field angle charts, and commonly used photometric data. While not perhaps the most comprehensive lighting book, it does a good job of covering the basics.

Very fascinating and readable. Since I am rather lacking in funds, I have decided to stop buying books for a while, but after reading most of this in the library, I decided that it was a worthy exception.

Above average "new age" stuff

Thompson takes us on a rollercoaster ride through the origins of culture, sex, agriculture and patriarchy.He does not solely rely on left brain abstract thinking, but has got the right side of the brain working too.In other words, he is into mythopoeic thinking, which gets down to deeper levels of existence.If for nothing else, this book is worth it for the sentence "Myth is the history of the soul."There is much wisdom in this sentence.Thompson has more insightful things to say about myth than many other writers on the subject.If he has a fault, it is a too wide sweep over his subject matter.Nevertheless, he has many challenging ideas to confront us with.

The oral traditions of the Luftwaffe

William Irwin Thompson's curious work "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light" was originally published in 1981. Due to the book's esoteric theme (in both senses of that word - "esoteric spirituality" and "incomprehensible"), its long shelf life and status as a classic are somewhat surprising, something Thompson himself admits in a new introduction to the 1996 edition. Even more surprisingly, "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light" created quite a stir when it was first published. One particularly negative reviewer accused the author of being a closet Nazi obsessed with oral sex! Another claimed that he was, in fact, a feminist fellow-traveller. That's an accusation?

I've only read this book once, and I admit that I haven't completely assimilated it. This review is therefore a first attempt at coming to terms with Thompson's ideas. The author does have a spiritual worldview broadly similar to Theosophy or even the New Age. Thompson's life project is to bring together spirituality, psychology and science. He is perhaps best known as the founder of the Lindisfarne Association. According to Wikipedia, its membership list was pretty impressive, including Lynn Margulis, E.F. Schumacher, Wendell Berry and Gregory Bateson. And, of course, David Spangler! Leading U.S. Anthroposophist Arthur Zajonc is another former fellow of the Association.

"The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light" is an attempt to synthesize mythology, "real" knowledge about human prehistory and an esoteric worldview. Thompson doesn't see any contradiction between the three. Indeed, he says that history becomes myth at the moment when our worldly knowledge is found wanting. Our theories about prehistory will therefore necessarily be mythological, despite protestation to the contrary by Darwinists and others. However, myths can also be "true" in the sense that a myth is the history of the soul. It's not clear to me how true myth is to be distinguished from false myth. Perhaps it cannot, since "false" myths can have very real consequences, such as the myths of sociobiology. Thompson wants scientists and historians to become bold poets, weaving mythological narratives about our past in order the better to change the future.

The myths Thompson in some sense regard as true deal with the fall of spirit into matter and its subsequent liberation or resurrection. While incarnating in matter is in one sense negative, in another sense it's necessary in order to evolve a new spiritual being which masters both the physical world and the nebulous astral worlds, while being in touch with spirit above. Two things strike me about Thompson's chosen myths. One is that they really do sound feminist. The author imagines a primordial matriarchy already during the Palaeolithic, and associates the later domination of men with war, want, class society and "civilization". The kind of feminists who like to emphasize the Mother Goddess and similar themes, will recognize much of the material in "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light", and Thompson apparently established a friendly relation with Marija Gimbutas. The other striking trait of Thompson's work is that he *does* sound obsessed with sex. There's more sex in this book than in "Game of Thrones"! The physical incarnation of man is intensely sexual, both metaphorically and literally. The author sees sexual imagery virtually everywhere, and connects this to kundalini, "the serpent power" or mysterious energy associated with the chakras in esoteric traditions. Of course, one of the chakras is associated with the reproductive organs.

Two things might be controversial with this bold reinterpretation of what our Stone Age ancestors were really up to. One is that Thompson seems to have an essentialist, quasi-biological view of men and women. While women might be "better" in some sense, their essentialist connection to sex, death and the hearth might strike more traditionally liberal feminists as regressive gender stereotyping. Thompson is also hostile to male homosexuality, pairing it with bestiality and incest, and viewing it as a form of anti-woman male bonding. The other theme that might be controversial (but perhaps to another kind of feminist) is that the ultimate goal of spiritual evolution is to create an androgyne. Indeed, Thompson regards many of the goddess figurines of the Neolithic as androgynous, rather than as purely female. Androgyny is also connected to kundalini: when the sexual serpent power reaches the head, a kind of spiritual "sexual intercourse" takes place between the raising kundalini (the phallus) and the head (the vulva).

Of the ancient cultures, Thompson regards the Egyptian as the highest (or "highest"), at least in terms of spiritual insight. The matriarchal cultures civilized the men but perhaps at the price of their manliness. Patriarchal civilization represents an attempt by men (or the masculine principle) to create a real ego rather than submerge in woman-centred collectivism. The Egyptian myth of Isis, Osiris and Horus strikes a balance between the genders and the two opposing forces in the universe (with the destructive or "evil" force represented by Seth). It also points to a balance between the physical and the spiritual, since Horus is said to be both, a divine being with a physical body. Thompson points out that while Egypt was a patriarchal society, the shift from matriarchy to patriarchy wasn't as violent in Egypt as in other regions. This is probably true. In fact, Pharaonic Egypt seems to have been at least semi- or quasi-matriarchal. Of course, Thompson doesn't literally regard Egypt as the "highest" or "best" civilization - it's simply the case that the evolution of consciousness (which must pass through several different stages) reached a kind of zenith in the Egyptian mystery schools.

But what should we *do* with all this esoteric knowledge? Here, Thompson is unclear - perhaps deliberately so, since his purpose isn't to propose a concrete political program, but rather to call for a new myth transcending the various programs. As already noted, he wants the scientists and scholars to become poets who re-enchant the world with new myths about our cosmic purposes. We have to reconnect with Isis (and, I suppose, Osiris and Horus). If not, another goddess will automatically fill the void: Lilith, the demonic spirit who dances in the ruins of cities. Civilizations that can't emancipate themselves through spiritual means, will be "emancipated" by default by Lilith. In plain English, they will be destroyed... Thompson warns that the meaning of the myth of Lilith will become apparent as the 1980's progresses. Here, he was off by a couple of decades, but what does that mean in the bigger scheme of things?

I'm not sure how to rate "The Time Falling Bodies Take to Light", and I admit that I still don't understand the title, but since I understood at least part of the point, I gracefully bestow three stars upon this, William Irwin Thompson's magnum opus.

One of the best books, if not the best book ever written ...

One of the best books, if not the best book ever written on chess tactics. The presentation is not just excellent, it is outstanding. Each chapter is devoted to a specific tactic, with an overview of the central idea behind the tactic and how it can be utilized. This is followed by a gamut of puzzles to help the reader find the tactic and apply it to gain the advantage in a given position. The puzzles are well thought out, well composed by the author and are fun to do. In scope, they range from simple to intermediate to quite challenging. The illustrations are superb- clear and crisp. When I opened the book. it grabbed me right away. I was pulled right into it and was hooked immediately. Mr. MacEnulty is not only an excellent player but an excellent writer and teacher as well. You simply cannot go wrong in purchasing this volume. It's worth the price of admission many times over. Anyone who wants to improve their playing ability can do no better than to purchase this wonderful work. This book and its author belong in the Chess Hall of Fame!

This is a superb book for beginner-intermediate level chess players. Well organized and the answers to the puzzles are conveniently in small print at the bottom of the page. Personally i like it that I'm able to read this book without a chess-board. Also convenient. The examples such as "removing the guard" are well explained.

Fantastic beginner book on tactics

A fantastic beginner book on tactics! Great for people who only know how to move the pieces. Chapter sampling: en prise (unguarded), take a more valuable piece, more (or better) attackers than defenders, fork, pin, skewer, discovery or discovered check, double check, overload or overworked piece, remove the guard, deflection, decoy, trapping. Explains chess notation. Has short sample games. I wish I had had such a book when I started playing. Hundreds of beginner rating points will be owed to this book.

About the Author
John Henry Haaren (1855-1916) was an American educator and historian. Haaren's father was German and his mother Irish. He studied under Prof. N. M. Butler at Columbia University, 1889-91, before becoming a teacher in New York. In 1907 he became Associate Superintendent of Schools in New York, increasing the number and efficiency of kindergartens and starting classes to teach English to foreigners. He was president of the department of pedagogy in the Brooklyn Institute. Haaren High School (which was located on 10th Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in Manhattan) was named in his honor. The Charles B. J. Snyder-designed school which was initially DeWitt Clinton High School is now Haaren Hall on the campus of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Book good, but revised

This book is still an excellent book, but it is a revised edition to the original and this is NOT CLEAR from the information on the product. Several chapters on famous men in church history have been removed from the compilation in this edition. It is missing chapters on "Two Monks: Benedict and Gregory", "Gregory VII and Henry IV", and "St. Francis and St. Dominic". It is also missing the original preface, although this is just an explanation of the author's philosophy of history education and not vital to the content of the book. I wish I had known before ordering that certain chapters had been removed.

Good History Suppliment

I read aloud a chapter or two each day from "Famous Men of the Middle Ages" to my homeschooled child as she was learning about the Middle Ages. It was a good suppliment to the curriculum. Written in story form, each chapter is only a few pages long, and gives an account of a person in history. This format gives more detail and is a bit more interesting than just reading a text book. Upon the completion of the Middle Ages unit study, my daughter took a 50 question test and remarked on several occasions, "Oh I remember, we read about that!" Due to that response I am looking to purchase something similar for the study of the Renaissance.

Another great book

I sat down the night the book came and read it cover to cover. Interesting and well-written, it is a good introduction to some of the key figures of the middle ages. My children used Famous Men of Rome last year and loved it. They like this one just as much and we highly recommend it as a springboard into a study of the middle ages.

I can't recommend this book more highly

This book changed my life. I have been a gardener most of my life, and have felt a connection to nature even as a city dweller. But reading this book has deepened my experience of the natural world into a much more spiritual level unlike any other book I have read previously. The science is fascinating and understandable; the wisdom is awe-inspiring. It is a book that I open and read whenever I need to plant my feet on the ground again. I can't recommend this book more highly.

This is not the "type of book" I would typically read, or thought I would enjoy. (I gravitate toward science, and abhor "storytelling). Nevertheless, this book was so highly recommended that I gave it a try. After only a few pages, I realized what a gift had so fortuitously come into my life. I fear I cannot adequately describe its profound essence -- part science, part wisdom, part communicator of the mysteries of animate "objects." All I can say is: read it and experience the magic for yourself. Thank you to all who took the trouble to recommend this book to me. I feel blessed and enriched for having read it.

a breath of sweet grass

Beautifully written, as evocative as a deep drought from a forest stream. Kimmer braids together the wisdom learned directly from trees with that learned from the books printed on them. Reading this book is like coming home to where we've always been--nestled in the heart of the Earth that cherishes us, even when we forget that.

I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Utter bunk but interesting on every page

This book, a reprint of Edward Heron-Allen's "Violin Making As It Was an Is," of 1884 is a very poor choice if you don't know the fundamentals of violin making and you really want to learn. For that, you should start with Simone Sacconi's `The "Secrets" of Stradivari,' probably the single most influential book of the past 30 years (available in Dipper's English or Adelmann's German translation from specialist online booksellers, but not, alas, from Amazon.com). If you are an amateur who wants to make an instrument, try one or more of Henry Strobel's books.

That said, "Violin Making As It Was an Is" is still quite an interesting book. Edward Heron-Allen was a rather brilliant Victorian polymath who had an intense interest in the violin. Somehow, he convinced the distinguished French violin maker George Chanot, then working in England, to show him how to build an instrument. The next thing Chanot knew, and apparently to his intense dismay, Heron-Allen was publishing what he had learned in a magazine intended for gentleman amateurs. His book is based on those articles.

What we have, then, is information about 19th-century French violin making reported through the filter of a talented English amateur. From this perspective, the most interesting part to me was the chapter on using a French outer form. I was also curious about the descriptions of tools and some odd older building techniques such as gluing linen to the sides before bending.

If you do read the book, you should certainly be aware that most of it is utter bunk. At the same time, I find something interesting on almost every page and quite enjoy the author's energetic style. Despite it's strange take on the craft, "Violin Making As It Was and Is" has also had a lot of influence, especially on earlier generations of English makers, who in a time before the proliferation of violin-making schools, made profitable use of what it had to offer.

Another reviewer mentioned the quip about this being "Violin Making as it Wasn't and Isn't" and that is certainly just. I would merely add Pliny the Elder's remark that there is "no book so bad but that some good might be got out of it."

Difficult to do justice

This volume certainly qualifies as one of those rare gems which holds a special place in your bookcase or shop. Heron-Allen manages to give complete detail to all facets of preparation and construction, in addition to holding the reader's attention through numerous footnotes and sidelines. A detailed technical book written in a very enjoyable fashion, and with a style no longer seen. I've been known to read this book on several occasions for pure joy.

This book covers everything from wood selection to finish. Includes full size plans for molds. The author also gives specifications of select Stradivarius violins. A must for any builders library!
