An Okay Book

This comic was based on Who Wants to be a Superhero and saw Season 1 winner Feedback given his own comic book. The book tells the origin of Feedback and how he got his powers. The ensuing story is a tad convoluted and a little silly at times, but it's not unpleasant, and it has great artwork as well as a nice look at alternate covers for other heroes. Overall, an okay book if you're a fan of real life superheroes or the series that spawned the book.

The story is well researched, with strong character development, and exciting battle scenes. John Pearce is brave, reckless, opinionated, selfish and totally believable. The plot is fast-paced and brings alive life on board a warship at this period. It can be read as a standalone, although there are references to actions that have taken place in previous books. If you are a fan of the Master and Commander series, this is for you. I’m off to my local bookshop to find the rest of the series. (Historical Novels Review)

David Donachie was born in Edinburgh in 1944 and has had a variety of jobs, including selling everything from business machines to soap. He has always had an abiding interest in the naval history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

I find it to be a good historical read of the prohibition era and the quest ...

This is the third book on the Gallo's that I have read. The author makes some charges that the other books hint at. Basically it points out the corruption the Gallo's practiced. I find it to be a good historical read of the prohibition era and the quest to be the largest wine producer in the US. I find the contradiction that Gallo liked the profits from Thunderbird but didn't necessarily like its name associated with the product to be humorous. Bottom line big business like to crush the small guys, at any cost.

"Gallo Be Thy Name" tells the story of the family which came to be a major player in the world wine market. The book mostly presents the family stories of three generations of Gallos. It chronicles the development of the company from a small California provider to a large company whose products spread across the globe.

During Prohibition, generally a difficult time for wineries, the Gallos prospered and expanded, largely by selling grapes, for cash, to the Capone operation in Chicago. Patriarch Mike Gallo liked to get his payments directly from Capone. With the repeal of Prohibition the Gallos went legit and continued to expand for decades. After the death of the founder, the growth of the winery continued under the leadership of his sons, Ernest and Julio, who would become the names associated with the business in the eyes of the nation. They would each take on duties of the business, Ernest for marketing and Julio for production. Throughout the years the business would prosper in the low cost, mass wine market, while aspiring to be recognized as contenders in the higher quality markets.

Author Jerome Tuccille does a good job of telling a story of business success marred by personal tragedy, a family torn by lawsuits but resilient enough to achieve dizzying heights of success. Founder Mike, who was viewed as a tyrant by his sons, and his wife Susie were found dead in 1933, either by murder or murder-suicide. Their grandson would later commit suicide. Their son, Mike, Jr., would later be sued by his brothers, Ernest and Julio, over an alleged trademark infringement and would counter sue over his parents' estate. Ernest and Julio would prevail in litigation, at the cost of permanent estrangement from Mike. Despite his feelings of betrayal, Mike would achieve success as a cheese producer.

This book does a good job of telling the story which, in some ways, sounds like "The Godfather" without being judgmental or turning it into a soap opera. He tells how the business was involved with the mob during prohibition and was often brushing with the law. As success followed, Ernest and Julio would buy political protection by their lavish campaign contributions. Although the family friction and squabbles would be unfortunate, the Gallos are not portrayed as a group of dysfunctional individuals, as is the case with some other prominent families. They come across as hardnosed business people who did what was necessary to succeed. The writing style is journalistic which, as good journalism will, holds your interest without arousing your emotions. I recommend this to anyone with an interest in family histories, the history of the wine industry or the history of California.

Love the 2nd to last chapter about HOPE

It's cool that they recognize some of the brands/companies that have been started by ex-gallo employees like they do in the 2nd to last chapter. It seems like Gallo has been the starting point for almost all major execs in the alcohol space. Probably one of the more impressive things about the family/company. If you go into Southern Wine and Spirits, Youngs Market, Johnson Bros. or any of the other most respected alcohol distributors in nation you find that the VP's and other higher ups started at Gallo for the most part. Great company with a lasting tradition and first class standard. Enjoyed this read.

Details on WW2 planes for modellers

Like Volume I (covering WW1 planes), this volume covers WW2 planes with reprints of drawings and articles aimed at scale modellers. 37 WW2 planes are covered, from Avro Lancaster to the Westland Whirlwind. Most of the obvious fighters and bombers from the US, Britain, Japan and Germany are included, along with a few pre-war types and trainers such as the Fairchild PT-19. I don't see any transport types however.

And doubtless any selection of only 37 will leave out one of your favorites. The photos are all black & white, the reproductions of the drawings are generally good, although I wonder if they were intended to be printed out in an 8x11" format.

The text includes matters of general interest, as well as specifics which bedevil modellers, like insignia size and placement, and how many variants of a certain plane were available.

Overall, a nice source of information for anyone modelling planes of this period.

Could be improved with propper abbreviation

This book is interesting then it concerns to drawings and most of the information. I would like however that all drawings had both landinggears shown in lowerd positions. The book is somewhat a dissapontment due to the author uses the abbrivation "Me" concerning the Messerschmitt of model 109. Messerschmitt fighters constructed before the the firm changed name in 1938, from Bayersche Fleugze Werke to Messerschmitt AG, were refered to with the abbrivation "Bf", not the "Me". Fighters constructed after the namechange were refered to as "Me" Therefore, it's a dissapointment to se the use of terms as "Me 109C" and "ME 109 G-10/R-1" since that indicated aircrafts put on the drawingboard after 1938. These aircraft were uppdates of aircraft concstructed before 1938 and in my appinion, should be refered to as "Bf 109C" and "Bf 109 G-10/R1" I also would have liked to se aircrafts like the Messerschmitt Bf 110 and the Kawasaki Ki-45 included in the aircrafs used in this book.

This is a great book of 3 view drawings for the R/C builder. I wish they would make more it is a great resource to have. The book arrived in great shape and quickly and would buy from this seller again.
