An addendum to his 2007 book
By Ms.Terry Ryder
This is an abbreviated version and addendum to Lyle's great 2007 'Professional' Edition, which covers all the vitamins, what they do, how he derived the 'optimal' amount instead the RDA bare-bones minimums, and then how thousands of brands sold in North America compare to the actual needed 'optimal' amounts.
An interesting tidbit I learned last week: The original multivitamin was Dr. Shaklee's Vitalizer tonic, created in 1915, and the whole vitamin industry has expanded from that. Some vitamins do not have what they state, or poisonous overages, synthetic forms of the Vitamin that do not work very well, and some contain toxic metals such as lead, arsenic, or mercury, so quality and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) certification is important. Some ingredients that are imported from China are not allowed to be sold inside China, which says something about the quality of some company's sources.
This book is VERY informative about Vitamin D, how important it is in cancer prevention and for our bones, and how the use of SPF 30+ sunscreens is actually causing the very problems it is meant to prevent.
The publishing was backed by Usana, and it is very evident in the book; Lyle has also done video ads for Usana. Some companies changed their blend to match Lyle's 2007 standards perfectly, but then he changed the standards to better match Usana's.
Since many vitamin companies went out of business during the recession, and stores change sources on the in-house brands, this book updates the list somewhat, but it is by no means comprehensive. The quick summary is that anything you buy at CVS gets 0 to 2 Stars (out of 5), with Centrum and One-a-Day rating a 1, GNC's products get 2-3 Stars, and through doctor's offices or direct marketing, 4-5 stars, since they are pharmaceutical grade and will cost around $70 and up for a month's supply. Truestar, from Canada, is the top performer according to the charts, with Douglas Labs, Usana, Source Natural, and a few others coming in close. Ariix is actually a spin-off created by Usana's top staff, who knew they could do better and formed a new company 3 years ago, and it is breaking all growth records. Being loyal to Usana, Lyle left out all the ingredients in Ariix's 'Proprietary Blend', while including Usana's, making the ratings a bit biased since many micronutrients in the Ariix blend were not included. Ariix 'Optimals' has the advantage of being in a capsule and tasteless, so they can be put into your morning juice if the large tablets by other manufacturer's make you urp. Older folks really like having that option, since many take so many pills as it is.
I noticed one big million dollar study of the efficacy of multivitamins that showed they did not do much used Centrum Silver, one of the lowest rated brands. It is imbalanced and has a lot of synthetic forms. No wonder they got the results they did.
The latest 2014 'Professional Edition' pales in comparison to Lyle's excellent 2007 book. It is not simply an update, leaving the info on all the different vitamins and then updating the comparisons to the latest formulations, but instead talks about the importance of Iodine in the diet. Dr. David Brownstein's book on Iodine is 1000% better.

makes you think about store brands
By amanda
I love this book as it is an independent study on almost all nutritional supplement and nutritional meal shakes etc. It really shows the true quality of the products you are buy even health food store products are not as good as you think. Some of the most popular brands in the stores have some of the lowest ratings. Makes a guy second guess what they buy and how money is really wasted.

Price Not Right!!
By Deborah E. Richter
The book has some good info but grossly over-priced. It's untra thin and small and soft back. I bought an equally useful hardback book for half the price of the consumer guide. I felt ripped off!!
